England's "Big 5" vs. United States "Big 5" (1990 - now).

First:
Who would you pick for England's "Big 5" and who would you pick for The United State's "Big 5" from 1990 to now?
I see it like this:
England: Oasis, Radiohead, Coldplay, The Verve, The Stone Roses
United States: Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers
Secondly:
Which country do you think has the best overall body of work? It is a complete coin flip to me, however I think the States offer more diversity. I enjoy the English bands I listed as a whole more than the United States bands, but we are absolutely nothing to scoff at. Due to the diverse range of music between the 5 United States bands, I'd give the nod to the United States.

Easily. Best body of work overall, and enjoy their products much more.

I just don't understand the point in arguing which bands are "better." It's all subjective and a matter of opinion.

Big 5, you're probably close to being spot on.. but I'll offer up my personal favorites (sticking still with larger known bands, not just straight indie) instead of the top dogs.
England: Oasis, Charlatans, Travis, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand
United States: RHCP, White Stripes, Beck, Audioslave, Pearl Jam

Unless we're talking about just rock, the U.S. kills England in this discussion. Jazz, hip-hop, funk, Motown, country. It's really not a competition.
If we're just talking rock n roll England is on top for me.

Lost all intrest when you listed "the Verve" as a top 5 band.

This probably sounds sacrilege, but I'd put Foo Fighters in over Nirvana, just from the length and depth of their career alone

That's what I was going to say as well.

Foo Fighters were a by product of Nirvana though and they've been basically making the same song for 10 years now.

And it's not close. In fact...
Radiohead > all of those american bands combined,

I don't see how their is a list of England bands and Porcupine Tree isn't among the top 5. The Verve... seriously... Muse too deserves a mention.
Radiohead is the crown jewl of England though. No Doubt about it.

You obviously do not have a clue in what you are talking about. The Verve is without a doubt one of the most highly respected and appreciated bands in England. Just because they didn't receive much air time over in the States doesn't mean they are not nothing short of spectacular.
Urban Hymns sits at #8 on best-selling albums of the 1990s in the United Kingdom. The only other band on my list in the category is Oasis (What's the story morning glory @ 1).
Also, Urban Hymns sits at #17 all time best-selling in the UK. All time...
