drummers, head choices?

I've been playing coated emperors over clear ambassadors on my racks and 14" floor. Clear pinstripe over clear ambassador on my 16" floor. Coated PS3 batter and black PS3 reso on kick. Emperor X over ambassador hazy on brass snare, and Evans genera HD dry over ambassador hazy on a 16.5x4 maple snare.
I like my overall tone but its kinda ringy and unless I dial my toms in perfectly, I'm fighting overtones constantly. I'm considering going coated emperors over coated ambassadors for at least my rack toms and probably the 14". Anyone else done this? What should I expect?

Your snare heads are the same as mine, but I think you switching your toms to coated emperors would reduce some of the overtones that are getting on your nerves. I use clears on my toms with some Evans e-rings (works wonders). I also recently switched my kick to Evans EMAD2 clear for my kick and its amazing.

My kick really loves the current combo with the Remo muffl ring. I'm already running coated emps on the batter for my 10-12-14 toms. My 8 has clear ambassadors on both sides and I'm very pleased there.
I've tried the rings and moon gels but they deaden the sound a little too much.
I read the coated emperors / coated ambassadors work well on another forum but just looking for more opinions. I stopped at guitar center today and picked up a coated ambassador pack. Already have a set of new coated emperors to slap on. Gonna give it a whirl tonight.

The only tom I have a clear batter on is the 16. Oddly enough, its the best sounding of the bunch aside from the 8.

Last reply to myself...
How do you tune your snare? I love the emperor x but its super finicky on my brass snare.
It sounds good low. If I up the tension it goes dead quick. Then I'll crank my reso and it starts to open up a shade but loses some of its punch. I can get it PERFECT on the smaller maple snare but I like the genera HD dry on that one better.

Slapped the coated emperors/coated ambassadors on my 10 and 12 last night. Really rounded out the tone and warmed them up. I have maple shells and sanded and refinished the inside with teak oil a few months ago and that made them around amazing. The new head combo makes them so smooth and warm. I have them tuned pretty tight and they have lots of boom without much overtone at all.
Very interesting sound. Kinda bonham-esque...think his sound from presence. Not a ton of initial attack but the notes hold hard.
