How many Steely Dan songs was he in?
Peg was probably one of the most popular one. Of course there were others. He was on Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, Aja and Gaucho.
Back to Chicago..... I'm sorry, I misunderstood your comment about "Team McDonald" in regards to Chicago. I was pretty sure he never appeared on any recordings from Chicago.

Skunk Baxter is the bridge between Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. Baxter, in addition to being one of the more influential guitarists of the 1970s, is also a self-taught defense consultant, with specific areas of rocketry, missile defense and counter-terrorism.
It was a strange time - the 1970s - where such highly intelligent folks like Baxter, Tom Scholz and Brian May were elite guitarists, as well as possessing elite brains.

Anybody that says they hate McDonald has zero soul. His voice took several DB, Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, Little Feat songs from simple good to great. One of the most recognizable voices ever and also one of the most soulful white boys ever. You have no soul. Keep listening to Tool or Gwar.

I'm an old school Doobie Brothers as a biker bar band fan. I never really got into their music when Michael McDonald took over as lead singe
Same.
To me, the McDonald stuff just sounds kinda sappy--like early '80's Lite Rock--stuff you hear playing on the overhead speakers in an office.
Now, the pre McDonald Doobies...just plain great music. Most of the albums I look forward to playing from beginning to end.
My favorite...Toulouse Street.

I hate Michael McDonald and I would be remiss if I didn't post this...

Posted on page 1 already.
I like them both...it's like two totally different bands. One rocked more, one jazzed and popped more. Both great IMO.
As far as McDonald, I always loved his voice and he really was the greatest background vocalist of that era also.
All that being said, this scene is absolutely perfect in terms of this discussion.
