M&S is probably the most boring band I've come across in 40 years of listening to music. Really feels like a marketing ploy to appeal to people afraid to like pop music.

it feels so contrived to me. I know people like it.
it's safe. it's simple. it's vague. it's ambiguous.
couple that with the "theme" clothes and it's a huge turn off to me.

It is. Sounds like some marketing people found a sound that would appeal to a specific audience. To me it lacks soul, spirit, well..anything. I've tried to like it since most of my younger friends think they are supposed to like it.

Right, which makes my opinion meaningless. Everyone has different tastes and mine don't appeal to everyone, and I find bands like M&S to be boring and lifeless. To each his/her own though, that's why art is art.

Before you said that they sounded like "emo folk," and now you're agreeing that their music is contrived and emotionless? Methinks you're just looking for reasons to hate M&S at this point.
If their music is simply a marketing ploy, they're fricking geniuses, considering that no one had experienced mainstream success with similar music.
