so, a songwriter should use fictional cities, dates, people and such?
A true songwriter? yes
Otherwise, you're not creating material. You're just listing observations, and that is lazy.

The same applies to women's names in songs. Mandy? Yeah, that's a real person (it's a lot of real people actually). Nothing original about it. Like the OP said, just lazy.
If you liked Blortik by Ray Charles, you'll love Anglanon by the Rolling Stones.

Do you have one example of this happening?

It's just too easy, they don't come up with their own shite. It's like when "fiction" writers use real places as their setting. Colorado is a real place, there's nothing fiction about it. And yet Stephen King still has the balls to call The Shining fiction. It's just unoriginal.

Neither does the OP. Honestly, this is one of the dumbest threads I've ever seen on this board.

When bands use contractions it is lazy.
Journey's song should be: Do Not Stop Believing
Traffic: I can not find my way home
Just plain lazy

The concept of being knocked down was already in existence. That's a lazy arse song. And all the words already existed except for the name of the song. The OP was asking about lyrics.
I'd guess Hanson's mmBOP is what you would consider the pinnacle of creativity.

You're the one arguing its merits. So what does that make you?

LucasP is right, thank god someone finally said it

I stand corrected, I'm not too proud to admit that I was wrong.

Not sure about pinnacle, but it's up there.

Journey's song should be: Do Not Stop Believing
Traffic: I can not find my way home

Baby I am going to need you

So they should make up a new calendar and then use those made up months in their songs?
It's better than using the same old months that everyone already knows.
Wat? So they should just start making up random words for months and days? Why the frick does that matter? They arent allowed to write songs about real places or things?

Since Mordor doesn't really exist, what kind of grade does Led Zeppelin get for that?

Zeppelin: D-
Tolkien: D+
Hobbits are essentially midgets and those have existed for decades so it's not really original.

No but when they write a song about what it's like to be in a band then I do consider that to be lazy.
Or how tough it is on the road.
