I still love the original lineup with Rod Evans the most. But, I have a ton of live albums/CD's from the Ian Gillan years.
DP was truly a great live band- On their long instrumental passages like 'Mandrake Root', Gillan would go off to the side, drain a pint, while Lord & Blackmore would play on sometimes for 25 minutes straight, while Paice & Glover held things together.

Unfortunately, I don't have much of my collection anymore. I have The Book of Taliesyn and Fireball on cassette. Machine Head and Perfect Strangers on vinyl. All the other material has vaporized.

I agree about the original lineup. I thought they were awesome. Gillan was a great replacement though. I got to see them twice. Both times with Gillan. 1985 and 2001. And like you said, they were great live from what I can remember.

Saw Rod Evans not with Deep Purple but with Captain Beyond. Great vocalist and front man who just dropped off the face of the earth.

Plus the 1st album 3-D cover is really cool. Not to hijack the thread. Deep Purple “Made in Japan” is one of the best live albums ever.

In Rock is BY FAR their best album and probably a top 5 rock album ever .( all of their stuff is good but In Rock is just perfection)

Great album for sure. No doubt about that. Not a bad song on the entire album. The opening intro into Speed King all the way through to the keyboards and guitar in Hard Lovin' Man.

It's impossible for me to pick a best of from them. I've probably played, listened to Machine Head more than any others.

Made in Japan, one of the greatest live albums of the rock era, maybe ever. Deep Purple was at its peak and the energy was off the charts.

I have mentioned here before that I once attended a triple bill show of Dream Theater, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Deep Purple.

Going to see Dead Dasies in Houston in October with Glenn Hughes! There 2021 new album is outstanding! Their playset is killer and the encore is "BURN". For 71 the dude can still sing! One of my favorite DP songs!!

Still have the Machine Head LP in Quad. Haven't played it in years, but still remember how unreal Space Truckin' sounded. It may be the best quad LP ever made. That and Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. That album suffered a nice dent from a party mishap in college Still have my quad player and 4 speakers. At some point I'm gonna have to hook that bad boy back up.
