Deep Purple - Come Taste The Band

I recently found this album in a box I scored. At first glance immediately recognized the lineup included Tommy Bolin on Guitar, David Coverdale at vocals and Glenn Hughes on Bass, along with originals Lord & Paice. Bolin's work here shows his amazing skill and sadly one of his last recordings. Hughes, an under rated bassist and volcalist in his own right, cut his teeth with one of my favorite bands from the early 70s, Trapeze. Albeit a different sound than what I was used to from DP, the album is very good. Was Bolin better than Blackmore? What could this lineup have evolved to had Bolin not succumbed to drug addiction? Give it a listen:

I've been a fan of this album since I was a kid. Observations:
1. Comparing Bolin and Blackmore is an apples and oranges thing. Both amazing at what they do but on opposite ends of the technique spectrum. I prefer Bolin's style but I'm probably in the minority, especially with DP fans.
2. This maybe should have been the first Whitesnake album. Or it could have benefitted from a different band name of some kind. That way it would have been better received at the time. The abrupt change in style absolutely enraged diehard DP fans.
3. "Gettin' Tighter" is probably my favorite hard rock song of all time. The funky breakdown at around the halfway point is so perfect, so soulful, so 70's. Bolin's playing is awesome and Hughes' bass and vocals knock it out of the park.

Bro get out of my head
j/k, man your thoughts were my mine exactly when I listened to it. Blackmore is one of my all time favs and when I think DP, I think of him on guitar. I thought immediately of Whitesnake as well. And when I heard the progression changes herein I was like ok......good stuff. Bolin was obviously a gifted player, this album may be the best I have heard from him. Thanks for the reply, great insight.

My older brother was in a rock band in the 70's. They used to play "Gettin' Tighter" because he loved the lead parts in it. Blast from the past, man.
Anyone seeing DP at the Saenger in September?

I love Bolin's playing. He has a couple of solo albums that are out of this world. He also played on a few tracks on Billy Cobham's Spectrum album. We lost a unique monster talent when he overdosed.
Hughes is still active, he has releases with Black Country Communion, California Breed, solo album Resonate, and played bass on Joe Satriani's latest solo album. All of these are recent and worth a listen. I think they are wonderful, however I'm a huge Deep Purple fan.
Rock on

I agree with whomever said apples and oranges. With Bolin, lost so young, it's kind of like a Duane Allman or Jimi Hendrix situation - we'll never know, we just have what we have. The potential was unlimited, although he was, basically, going his own way at the time of his death.
He didn't look to be too bad off just hours before the overdose. Basically a fatal combination of everything available...
