Indie rock legend of Silver Jews died today. He released one of the best albums of the year so far under the name Purple Mountains.

Reading that article makes me think that he probably either OD’d on accident or on purpose. Terrible.

The lyrics on the new album are pretty dark at times, so I wouldn't be shocked. It is a great record though. If you liked Silver Jews, you'd like it. Probably will be a tough listen now knowing what we know.

Damn.

I was lucky enough to be at the Silver Jews last show at Cumberland Caverns. One of my favorite bands, in a cave, their last show, and Berman was billing it as 15 songs for $15.00.

David started talking to me before the show, and, embarrassingly, I was a little star struck and froze up a bit. He was super cool and filled some of my awkward silences. I asked him about sound check and the sound in the cave. He went on about what a great room it was, and I got a hilarious picture of me smiling like a fool next to him looking all cool. I got great pictures during the show.

During the show he talked a lot about why he was quitting music. He mentioned sort of feeling like a beer salesman (this was before infamous blog post about his father). He even chose the cave because he wouldn’t have to see a Heineken ad in there, and could take a stand for himself by not feeling like a shill in such a space. Ironically the cave is decorated with a pipe organ from an old theater he worked at in Texas. He had promised himself to never enter that theater again after being fired from it. That stand he took back then was inadvertently walked back.

Damn. I’m jealous. I never got into SJ until toward the end and never got to see them. I heard about that cavern show. Sounds amazing.

It’s sad to see people struggle then seem to finally get their shite back together only to die shortly after.

And Seaward, I listened to a bit of the new album and I agree, only a few songs in and it is some of his best work.

He went to High School in Dallas but I'm not sure how long he lived here.

No Berman, no Jason Molina, No Elliott Smith. A lot of my favorite singer songwriters from my youth are dead.

Had a few beers tonight and listened to a lot of Silver Jews/Purple Mountains. Damn, he truly was a hell of a lyricist.

This one hit me hard. Haven't been this crushed by a musician death since Bowie. This one just really hurts. I didn't get into SJ until after they had broken up, but I just lived off of those albums in college. He reminded me, in a way, of John Darnielle's early work. These deceptively simple songs are catapulted into brilliance by his masterful lyrics.

When Purple Mountains was announced, I was overjoyed. Maybe this would be a chance to see the man I'd grown to obsess over. Perhaps he'd even play some SJ tunes when they toured. The album came out and it was brilliant. The same brilliant, cutting lyrics, with elevated instrumentation. This seemed like the best timeline.

And then it was over in an instant. I can't pretend to know the demons he had been dealing with. Reading the lyrics also reminded me of Bowie's death. In retrospect, it was clear that Bowie was about to die. It completely changed how I viewed Black Star. Now I'm listening to Night's that Won't Happen and I'm angry. Powerless.

"The dead know what they're doing when they leave this world behind
When the here and the hereafter momentarily align
See the need to speed into the lead suddenly declined
The dead know what they're doing when they leave this world behind

And as much as we might like to seize the reel and hit rewind
Or quicken our pursuit of what we're guaranteed to find
When the dying's finally done and the suffering subsides
All the suffering gets done by the ones we leave behind
All the suffering gets done by the ones we leave behind"
