Counting Crows and guitar nerd question???

Saw their show last night which was good, but not great. Not great because the singer (Adam) likes to talk too damned much and get interpretive during each song. Which is annoying with songs that are near 20 years old.
The nerd question for the guys out there who have actually paid for money or for people. How much shite can you do with a Fender Telecaster? The lead guitar was split between two guys. The guy farthest from me was a Gibson guy. Breaking out a Les Paul and a couple of older school styles. But the guy near me made me laugh. The techs kept running out and changing his guitars and I believe he had 4-6 Telecasters!!?? One Stratocaster.
I am guessing different tunings? One did have a capo on it. The guy was good and made me want to buy one. Did not realize how many of their songs were played with one.

I would have to see what he was doing, but it could be any number of things. Each guitar may have had different pickups. One or two may have been hollow-bodies. Also, if you tend to play in multiple tunings regularly and have the money, having a distinct guitar for each is useful. This is because the intonation between two different tunings is actually different. If you set the intonation for Standard E and retune to Open C, you will find your notes on the 12th fret are out of tune.

You can take any guitar and do a TON of different things with it. Like Jester said...

This can make a BIG difference. Listen to some John Frusciante in his RHCP days. His main guitar was a 62 Strat. With that sound in your mind, flip over to Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins. His main is a 57 Strat. The two guitars are pretty similar from the factory...slight differences but most would probably not notice a big difference. Corgan, however, puts DiMarzio's or Lace Sensors in most of his strats. The difference?

Granted some of that is going to be other factors but the pickups create the core sound difference.

This too. There are TONS of different configurations for a Telecaster. 2 single coils, 2 buckers, 1 and 1, maple/rosewood, solid/thinline...the options are endless.

WAY too many people overlook this. The overall setup for a guitar can alter the sound. If you're setup for standard and change tuning it will sound 'off'. HUGE part of a guitar's particular sound.

Pickups like everyone said. Generally speaking on what comes stock on a Tele, they are known for their twangy and slightly chime-y sound. Les Paul's and SG's are the warm-grunting guitar. Strats are bright and have that "spank" sound to them. Change the pickups and this all changes. Folks don't tweak the sound of Gibsons much generally speaking.

Some Tele's also come with drastically different pickup switch selections...
For instance, IIRC the three-way switch on American Tele's toggles between each pickup, but the middle position splits the pickups (somewhat like the Strat goes out of phase in the 2nd/4th positions).
The middle position '52 Tele reissue I have selects my neck pickup, and the far left position is that pickup with a tone capacitor which cuts the highs out of the pickup, enabling a jazzy sound which is completely different (almost like you threw a big blanket over the amp).
