As someone who is not familiar at all with Chicago but would like to check em out, where would be a good starting point? Be it a few of their better songs or albums or whatever.
The first three albums. In order.

Their first 2 albums were arguably 2 of their best.
Album 1 CTA had classics Beginnings, Does Anybody Know What Time It Is, Questions 67&68 and I'm a Man
Chicago 2 had my favorites 25 or 6 to 4 and Make Me Smile along with Color My World
Chicago 3 wasn't as strong with Lowdown being top hit and I Just Want to Be Free
Chicago 4 was Live at Carnegie Hall
Chicago 5 featured Saturday in the Park and Dialogues
These early days with Terry Kath were clearly their better days!!!

Chicago XI was Kath's last album. He wasn't playing Russian roulette... he was cleaning a gun and his friend asked him, "Do you think you should be cleaning a gun in your condition?" He had been drinking. He dropped the mag and showed him empty mag. Inserted it and said "do you think I'd clean a loaded gun?" Forgetting to clear the chamber, placed gun to his head and pulled trigger..... Sad as he was planning a solo album.

Didn't realize but you are correct Chicago XI was Kath's last album. There were always conflicting reports whether he was just cleaning a gun or truly playing Russian Roulette. I always heard it was RR!!!

I truly think this band died with Terry Kath. I've been listen to some of their early stuff and it was fantastic.
Probably my favorite all time group. I hadn't made the connection about the death of Terry Kath but it makes sense.

As I recall, he dropped the magazine on a semi auto pistol, not realizing there was a round in the chamber and shot himself in the head.

I liked Alive Again.
CBS used to start off NBA broadcast s with that song

Alive Again was there only hit off the album Hot Streets which was their first album after Kath's death.
Truly the band was totally different from this point forward. Chicago 17 with You're my Inspiration and Along Comes a Woman was their best album without Kath. Ironically this was their last album before Peter Cetera left the band!!
From this point on, Chicago never was really successful again.

Stay the Night and Hard Habit to Break were also hits on Chicago 17.
Peter Cetera started a solo career after this album.

All of Chicago's music is ear candy. While I prefer the 70s stuff, their 80s pop, as cheesy as it was, was still good.

80's Chicago was Definently cheesy!!!! My opinion, Chicago should have disbanded after death of Kath to pay proper homage to their friend!! He was the main driving force behind the band's early success. Just like the Eagles did after Glen Frey's death and even Led Zeppelin did after John Bonham's death!!
