Can good singers really say whatever they want and people still listen?

A couple of examples: It doesn't apply to just singers. They could be a terrible singer and a great performer.
Aerosmith's "I don't wanna miss a thing": There's a part where Steven Tyler's exact words are "I don't wanna cloooooo mah eyehhhhhhh"
Michael Jackson: "Chum ON-uh"
Blues Traveler: (From "The Hook") and I Quote..."It doesn't matter what I say...as long as I sing with inflection."
Thoughts? Any other good examples?

it can certainly go the opposite way, many of the folks I listen to are fantastic songwriters but when it comes to vocals, not so much

Early REM... Most verses are impossible to figure out, if there were actual words at all.

Do you really think anyone digs Bon Iver for their lyrics?
Alot of people like Sigur Ros but they sing in Icelandic. He could be singing about afterbirth for all we know.
one of my favorite lyrics btw

Yeah...exclude scat singing or foreign languages.
That doesn't really apply. I'm talking about tunes that are sung in english that people should be able to get.

It does apply because it shows that people listen to the music over listening to the actual words. The voice is just another instrument and being able to understand the lyrics or how much they impact you is just bonus.
A good song with good lyrics becomes that much better but a shitty song with good lyrics is still a shitty song.

I still don't know half of the lyrics by the Butthole Surfers.

Warren Zevon in The Hula Hula Boys has a chorus that is:
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana
Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana
Which is Hawaiian for "sing the chorus".
