Ok here is the deal. I am seriously considering pulling the trigger on a serious (to me anyway) set up of Definitive Technology speakers. Around 3k. Mind you I want good driving music as well as great surround sound speakers. Looking at the BP-9060 tower speakers and a 9060 center channel. Also the two Dolby Atmos speaker inserts. This setup sounds great.

Now the question. Is it possible to get the same quality for less than $3000.00? If so please do not be afraid to get specific.

What do you plan on using to drive those speakers? No use spending 3k on speakers if you don't have an amp/preamp to match

My advice for you is to get rid of any bias and go to dealers with a couple of cd's that have complex instrumentation in it. Sit down and listen to the different speakers. Towers only though! Not all of the surround speakers.

Bring different cd styles though: jazz, blues, rock, classical. Really whatever you listen to the most, but make sure it's different styles.

I used John Bulter Trio's "Sunrise Over Sea" and Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" when I did my testing. JBT has some songs with subtle instrumentation in it that many speakers I tested didn't even project. MD is classic jazz, and perfect for testing sound.

I walked away buying Paradigms, but that's strictly due to what I liked best. DTs are good, but I find them better suited for movies and surround sound purposes than for music. This was also 10yrs ago, and this could all be different now. This is also why you really need to forget wanting to buy DTs and go listen to everything brand you can. Maybe DT will be your favorite, but you won't know until you do this

For the quality you are looking for I think 3K is your target. Everything is in tiers, and you'll notice a degradation of quality if you try and spend 1-2K. Not that you'll get bad speakers, but they won't be as nice. 3K won't get you the best either. Figure out your budget you are comfortable with spending and listen to speakers in that range.

One more thing: don't get caught up in the surround speakers. I believe you'd be better off dropping 3K on your towers and then putting JBLs or some other nice sounding value speakers for your satellites. Keep in mind that when playing movies and such you still get your sound mostly from the center channel and towers. A clean sub is important too.
