Bonnaroo Wrap-Up

Just got home from my first Roo and it was really an incredible experience. I woke up this morning pretty disappointed that I wasn't heading toward Centeroo again for the day. I've been nothing but smiles since rolling up to the site Wednesday night. Even my 30 min walk in the rain early this morning to grab my car and the heavy traffic on the way out couldn't wipe the smile off my face.
I missed out on a ton of shows that I wanted to see but I guess that's just the way it goes. Below are some of the more memorable shows. I can't say that any of the ones I looked forward to were disappointing.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. - kicked it off with these guys and they were a blast. Could tell they were enjoying it just as much as the crowd.
Alabama Shakes - by the 2nd half of their set I was realllly diggin it.
Two Door Cinema Club - only caught a little bit but was a fun show
Sam Bush Band - might have been the best show of the whole festival.
Blind Pilot - Didn't really know much of their stuff so they were an unexpected surprise. Really enjoyed them.
Childish Gambino - Wasted my time at this shite.
The Roots - If I was into rap/hip hop more then this could have been my favorite; Leon Black introduced them which was pretty funny.
Superjam - For those who stayed up for this instead of Skrillex, it was quite a treat. Honestly didn't recognize who was all up on stage, but they were putting down some real funky jams.
Dawes - One of my favorites of Bonnaroo. I caught their 30 min session which ended up drawing a pretty large crowd. Played a pretty laid back set and finished perfectly with "Little Bit of Everything".
Beach Boys - seriously thought I was going to just get a little kick out of seeing them but they were awesome. They looked like mummies on stage, but actually sounded great and obviously the crowd was having a blast.
Bon Iver - Was afraid that their sound wouldn't translate that well to a big outdoor live setting, but I was completely wrong.
It turned into quite an expensive event for me, but I'd definitely do it again the same way(rv rental) or give camping a shot to get the full experience. I wasn't expecting so many high school kids. I'm pretty sure NJ parents just send their kids to Bonnaroo instead of summer camp. I couldn't imagine going to this thing at age 17, but at age 23 I wasn't too old
... until some girl addressed me as "sir". Anyways, I look forward to hopefully making more Roo trips in the future. Reality hits hard tomorrow morning, but until then, I'll keep my permanent Roo smile on

Gambino got a rough set though because the sound was bad. His vocals were way higher than the music. His flow was killer though.
Also, Skrillex was a hell of a time, even if that makes me lame. I was totally sober with a group of sober people (who hate dubstep) and we all had fun.
My favorite sets were (in no particular): Alabama Shakes, Beach Boys, Bon Iver, City and Colour, Dumpstaphunk, Major Lazer, Skrillex, Ludacris, Two Door Cinema Club, Dale Earndhardt Jr. Jr., The Roots, and Radiohead.
I look at it as there's a ton of music I'd usually never be into, but I try it out and get surprised.

Saw Bon Iver at Jazzfest, thought his set was pretty incredible.
Really hoping I get to make it to ACL to see The Roots. Always been a band I'd absolutely love to see. Ben Howard too if any of y'all caught that.
Did you make it to Aziz Ansari? Really looking forward to seeing his standup next week in NOLA.

No, I missed out on all the comedy. A friend of mine tried going to one of the acts and he was told the wait to get in was 2 hours... not worth it.

Just got back myself, not a huge fan of dubstep...festival has changed for the worse over the years but it was still a good time....The Shins impressed me the most despite having to battle with Young the Giant....dumb scheduling if you ask me

Umphrey's McGee was the show of the weekend for me easily. Super Jam was AMAZING with all those talented accomplished musicians. Phish mailed it in but no surprise there.

I only listed what was off the top of my head at the time... obviously this is just a sample of what I saw...
Overall, Sam Bush, Superjam, and Dawes were my top 3. SB and Superjam were flat out impressive whereas Dawes is a band I really dig and enjoyed for that reason.
Honestly, the headliners aren't right up my alley which is why I didn't mention them... Phish is more my style than RHCP and Radiohead, and I enjoyed 3 hours before calling it quits. Missing Umphrey's McGee is my biggest regret of the festival.
And about the increase in dubstep, I missed almost all of it and still didn't have a chance to see everyone I wanted to. I didn't feel like it had too much of a presence, but then again, I don;t have any prior years to compare.

that's not what he is talking about. there used to be a lot less main stream. a lot less security. a lot less sorority girls. more drugs. better lineups. not saying i don't like bonnaroo now. It's still an amazing time.

A lot more mainstream is exactly what I meant...MTV seemed to take control of this years lineup and it was definately aimed at a younger demo....I still enjoyed it but I think Deluna will be better this year simply because of PJ

I actually, even though I've loved it the past 2 years, have noticed a huge shift just between this and last year's festival.
First, as stated, it's too "mainstream". Not in the hipster "OMG I HATE IT CUZ ITS COOL!" way, but more in line with the "Holy shite, I think Alabama's entire Greek scene is here!" Nothing wrong with it, but the demographic changing is making the music change. I saw bands of every genre and enjoyed myself to the fullest, but last year destroyed this year in terms of the sets.
If I could, I'd have traded Skrillex last year for Wayne's spot. From what I've heard, Skrillex has never done a show like that before so even if you aren't a dubstep guy (like me), it really had the chance to blow you away. A female friend who's into that literally came in her small shorts when I told her about it, but like Alice Cooper, fun., Ludacris, and many other said on stage this year or before going on, you just feel the need to do it bigger at Bonnaroo (this applies to Coachella as well).
Another issue, although I stayed clean outside of a little drinking because I was feeling ill and had no Claritin (frick... my... life. If you were there, you know why that was a bad thing.), people were scheming on drugs so hard. Last year, my buddy got two hits of acid for nothing and they were legit. This year, it's like dealers found out they could sell bunk shite en masse and just flooded it. Although it's not necessary, drug culture is huge at Bonnaroo, and one of the most cool things is that if you want to smoke a blunt and listen to Bon Iver or drop acid and see Skrillex, you can and no one'll give you shite for it. That's a downer.
Yet another issue I had was with how they set up camping. This is the second year in a row I get there within hours of opening, and they stick me in Jaws or Wooderson with huge fields super close to Centeroo wide open. This year it worked out because there was some woods next to us so it gave us more shade to sleep longer in the morning and a quick place to piss (or if you're my buddy, take a giant shite). If people get there early, give them a good spot, Roo!
Finally, the frickING FOOD situation must be fixed. 10 dollars for a burger is ridiculous. The profit on that must be... insane. Considering everyone volunteers for set up, clean up, etc., they can afford to drop that a bit or increase the sizes. I shouldn't be stroking my shaft at the possibility of getting a McDonald's value meal for 5 bucks.
I think they need to take down how many tickets are sold and book better bands. Those tickets WILL sell so it's not like it's a financial decision. RHCP didn't have the crowd until an hour in. I got off the ground for Under the Bridge and a few others. Radiohead's set was great too, but Jesus Christ, can we get a line up like last year when I got to see Mumford followed by (my personal favorite set of 2011) the Black Keys and then Eminem? Yeah, it was mainstream shite, but those were huge, fun bands. Radiohead is great, but RHCP can't just go through the motions. Outside of Flea being Flea, it was dead.

Hahahaha. Bunk drugs at festivals has been going down for decades, mon. You really think just this year someone thought "hey I can make a lot of money off these custy kids!" ? No way. You just got lucky the year before.

Are you talking about inside Centeroo? Either way you shouldn't be buying food at a festival with camping. Bring your own meals (or eat more drugs).

I just don't feel like it was as bad before. Yeah, it was there, but finding good shite wasn't too difficult. As for the food, being in Jaws made it hard to go back to the camp to eat every time. I mean, I still loved it, but holy shite, food dropped me 100 bucks and I barely ate.
