I heard this in line at CVS today picking up my AIDS medications. I got home and confirmed online that I wasn't hearing things.

"I'll be there for you" verse = "Don't Let Me Down" verse.

How did they not get sued for this?

You needed to make that joke in the arena of the OT, not the jazz bar of the music board.

I won't listen to Bon Jovi, but I could see them ripping the Beatles off. Since they also previously ripped off Depeche Mode's "Policy of Truth".

They sound similar because it's a pretty standard chord progression.
If everybody got sued for that type of stuff, there would never be any new music.
The Beatles borrowed it first.

Just never really liked Bon Jovi. Don’t let me Down is one of my top five Beatles songs. Bluesy goodness.

yeah, I get that. It's still just a simple standard progression though, and if you took away all of the songs that follow it, probably 25% of popular music would evaporate.
If Bon Jovi borrowed from one of the Beatles more intricate, innovative songs, it might be a different matter.
Or if they borrowed lyrics or story line in a blatant way.

It's the combination of the chord progression (generic) and the melody (not generic).

It's a rip off.

Not even in the same key.

Not a huge Beatles fan but that is a damn good song.

Irrelevant.

It's the exact melody.
