Better Album: Antichrist Superstar or The Downward Spiral

VS
Both produced by Trent Reznor (AS was Co-Produced with Manson but as Manson said on Stern last week Trent WAS that album, most notably The Beautiful People)
Both concept albums.
Both have strong opening tracks that pull you in literally from the first second.
Both have GREAT emotional closers (hurt, man that you fear)
Both follow a single character, and the rise and fall of them including the stages inbetween.
TDS was 1994, AS was 1996, both awesome years for music in general.
Both have all-time and career best singles (Closer, The Beautiful People)
I almost feel like they are part of one single release, almost like a double album,
I LOVE TDS, much so, but if I had to choose I might lean AS, just because it had more impact on me as a 13 year old when it hit, rather than the 10 year-old me that heard TDS.

Antichrist Superstar. Downward Spiral is a great album though.

I'm going to have to go with Antichrist Superstar. I do believe Mechanical Animals is a superior album though.

Mechanical Animals is great, but IMO AS inches ahead of it.
One thing about MA is that it was Madonna Wayne Gacy's shining album, the synth/keys on it and the whole atmosphere is amazing.
Antichrist is just more powerful from start to finish, where Animals exudes atmosphere.
Both are amazing though.

Antichrist Superstar may as well have been a follow-up to TDS. Very similar style.
I'd go with NIN, but I've never really given MM much of a chance and wasn't a fan of this genre when it came out. I've never listened to any of Manson's albums in full.

Do youself a favor and listen to his self proclaimed triolgy of albums, they are his best,
Antichrist Superstar
Mechanical Animals
Holywood (In the Valley of the Shadow of Death)
The timeline actually goes in reverse order but those albums are all solid from start to finish. If you're a NIN fan you most likely will dig them.

i used to have what i called my "annoy the neighbors list" of songs.
Beautiful people was at the top of the list at one point.

You want a great annoy ANYONE album, put in NIN - Fixed and crank it up.
lolz by all
futher down the spiral would be good too.

when NIN played woodstock , i had the sound pumped through my stereo so loud i'm really surprised no one calls the cops.

Saw that, hope he's okay.
I have to change my statement about MA I think when compared to AS that MA is the better album. I just finished listening to it for the first time in a long time and its really fricking good

Tough to call. I'd almost say equally awesome as if you could wear out CDs, both of these were wrecked by me. The Downward Spiral is so personal to me that I reach for it at difficult times like it is whiskey.
Antichrist Superstar is about as aggressive as any album can get. Saying that I saw him perform this during its time is priceless.
AS could've been performed by Trent Reznor as follow up to DS and idk if there would be any drop off. Idk if MM could do the same for TDS. Two CLASSICS in my opinion.
1a. The Downward Spiral
1b. Antichrist Superstar
My favorite tracks on each:
TDS-The Becoming
NIN-The Becoming(yeah it's from Still but still...)
AS-Angel With The Scabbed Wings
Marilyn Manson-Angel With The Scabbed Wings

Great picks
Hard to pick one off each but if I had to probably Reflecting God and Ruiner

I gotta go with TDS. Piggy, Heresy, Ruiner, and Hurt are all amazing tracks.
Take that with a grain of salt though because as others have said, I've really never given Manson an in-depth listen.
The responses here actually surprised me. TDS is such a classic that I figured it wouldn't even be close, but the responses have me wanting to check out AS

I never really got either, particularly Manson - oh he had the odd single here and there that caught my attention, but this Halloween dress up for "over the top" shock value's sake - I guess I was already a grown arse man when he hit the scene for that to resonate with me.
On the whole, obviously I'm going to go with NIN (Reznor) over Manson, regardless of how much Reznor was involved with the latter and that goes for this debate.
The Downward Spiral is the clear winner for me in this thread.

Wow. I've given AS a few listens and I can't believe I actually kind of like it. Manson just has always seemed like an idiot to me and out of his mind. Especially watching him on Talking Dead. But I wasn't a NIN fan either when TDS came out or even The Fragile. NIN seemed a bit too heavy for me at the time and MM just seemed so gimmicky. I love NIN now and after listening info to AS several times, it is a very solid album.

AS is not a good representative of Manson's overall catalog. Its so much better than everything else he's done. It really works better as a NIN album. Reznor had such a great run in the mid-late 90s when you count all his projects. The Lost Highway and Natural Born Killers soundtracks are great too.
