Strictly personal preference:
Modest Mouse
Built to Spill
Titus Andronicus
The National
Pixies
Considering popularity, critical acclaim and influence (with some personal preference):
The Beach Boys
The Velvet Underground
REM
Talking Heads
Nirvana
I don't have Tom Petty on either, but he was undoubtedly awesome and wouldn't be a bad choice.

I didn't recognize you at first... But then I saw Built to Spill mentioned and I said to myself "Hey! I know him!". Then I looked over to the left and realized you'd changed your avatar.

Yeah, my old avatar wasn't showing up anymore, so I switched it up. But I will champion Built to Spill no matter what avatar I have.

ABB
Grateful Dead
Jimi Hendrix (he was the main dude after all)
J Geils Band
Little Feat
If you are going to expand irregardless of longevity, then you would have to add Janis and the Doors.
Depending oh your definition of R&R, you would have to add Elvis, Jerry Lee and BB. Plus many other "blues" players.
Don't sell the US short. There are a ton of players and bands that I did't mention..

I'll throw in Creedence. Unfortunately their run together ended so quickly.

1) Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers-his catalogue of music is incredible
2) The Band-North America anyway
3) The Doors
4) CCR
5) The Eagles

Me too, except I kinda hate the Beach Boys. I would substitute Guided By Voices there.

I would be perfectly fine subbing in GbV. I actually prefer GbV, but figured the Beach Boys had a little more widespread appeal.

Nice list but you gotta add
Aerosmith
Journey
The Cars (their debut album is very close to perfection).

Real tough list...
Three that weren't on the original list but were added later,
Steely Dan,
Creedence Clearwater,
ABB.
There has to be one we are all forgetting, it just seems like there is....
