the best resume is easily Josh Freese
The band's he has been a permanent member of, to the band's he has toured with, to his studio session work is unmatched.

Because performance is more important than recording nowadays (IMHO), it is incredible that he is the first guy off the bench for about 15 big name bands.
And, I get that he doesn't really want a permanent gig - or doesn't for too long. One of THE coolest guys in Hollywood, by reputation.

Another poster said it, too many drummers to come up with a "best one of all time". You gotta take into account that jazz drummers are basically on a different planet than rock drummers.
That’s why it will always be BR and then the rest.

Ringo is the guy who comes to mind here (although he is better than a lot of people give him credit for)
imo one of the most criminally underrated drummers of all time with regard to how your "average Joe" considers him
The guy didn't play technical for technical's sake. He played to the music which shows great understanding of what a song is

Why is it that we expect every professional except musicians be as technically advanced as possible.....yet when we begin talking about guys like Ringo Star (who couldn't open Buddy Rich's stick bag) it all goes out the window.
When a drummer (like myself) hears someone say "the guy didn't play technical) I interpret as the following.....he couldn't do a press role to save his life or read music.... but he was great.
Down vote away. Starr sucked and the only well known drummer worse is Charlie Watts

I judge people on whether they like drum solos
If they like drum solos (or God Forbid, bass solos) I have no interest in anything they have to say
(FWIW Keith Moon is on record as hating drum solos)

Anyone who can play "the somberlain" and "storm of the light's bane" albums in perfection.

Your ignorance just exploded across this board.

Meh. Drum and bass solos are like sweets - great every once in a while, but too much gives you a bellyache.
(ETA: Looking at you Ginger Baker and Les Claypool...)

Pretty much all the usual suspects have been mentioned, and I won't argue against any of 'em. Someone said drum solos are boring, and I'd agree with that alot of the time, but Lee Pearson adds showmanship to his solo:
Lee Pearson solo with Chris Botti

I totally agree with that. My question is when a guitarist or keyboardist performs a solo, the drummer and bassist don't get up and walk off the stage. So why does the rest of the band leave when the drum solo starts? Can't the drummer do a solo with everybody else playing too?

They put them in there so he can shine. They're literally giving him the moment in the spotlight.
Q: What do you call a guy who hangs out with 3 or 4 musicians?
The drummer.

The making of "Be My Baby" w/The Ronettes/Phil Spector (session tape)
Listen as Spector gets the sound he wants out of legendary Wrecking Crew drummer Hal Blaine
