Background: My older brother loves loves loves Afghan Whigs. I haven't heard much of them, but I love the Twilight Singers, and so I told my bro I was going to embark on an Afghan Whigs immersion. And then I'm gonna see them live at the 930 club in October.

My brother told me to listen to them chronologically, but I'd rather listen to the best one first, to get me hooked in.

Thoughts? Which album y'all dig the most?

Gentlemen is my favorite album of all time, but Congregation is the one that got me hooked. I believe starting with Congregation then moving to Gentlemen is the best move. I think it will give you a better appreciation of the greatness of Gentlemen.

Start with "Gentlemen", Graduate to "Black Love."

If into more of a raw Sub Pop style go with "Congregation."

They are playing Tip's in October...tickets bought.

Got mine also. I had another thread going with the Doc a few weeks ago. My old band toured with them around the south and midwest in 1990/91. It was a lot of fun.

IMHO Gentlemen is the best.

Here is a review from Airplay direct on us

Biography
GOVERNMENT CHEESE brought punk rock to a small sleepy southern Kentucky town of Bowling Green, Kentucky in 1985. For 7 years they traveled in vans as they played all over the American south and worked their way as far north as NYC and as far south as Texas. After making it briefly onto MTV. Several of their songs – “Camping on Acid,” “Mammaw Drives the Bus,” “Fish Stick Day” – made it onto the national college charts.

20 years later, college and high school students treasure their memories of growing up dancing to Government Cheese. The band broke up in 1992, but many reunion gigs have happened since then. Their story has been immortalized in the cult classic book “Cheese Chronicles: The True Story of a Rock and Roll Band You’ve Never Heard Of” written by Cheese founder Tommy Womack.

John Curley is a bad arse bassist. I partied with him and Steve Earle. We did some shows with them when they were called the Black Republicans at one time also

So far I've listened to Congregation and Gentlemen in full, and now I'm a few songs into Black Love.

Congregation didn't really blow my doors off. But I thought Gentlemen was excellent. And from what I've heard thus far on Black Love, I'm thinking I might end up liking it even more than Gentlemen.

After I finish Black Love, I'm on to 1965.

With Afghan Whigs, as with some other bands, there are basically two camps. You have your Gentlemen people and your Black Love people. Both camps are pretty staunch in their opinions.

I actually thought 1965 was the best.

I believe Congregation followed by Gentleman.. never got into the later records or even the Twilight Singers, but thought the stuff was OK...

They did a couple of covers for the Beautiful Girls soundtrack... one was Cant Get Enough of Your Love (Barry White) and this cover of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes... I really like this one
