Saw them at Stubb's BBQ in Austin last year. Really cool show. Only knew a little of their stuff going in but was pleasantly surprised by their whole set.
So...yes Beirut is the best gypsy/eastern European sounding indie band on the planet. Although don't know any others.

I like Gogol, but the horns in Beirut are just poetry.

I would throw Caravan of Thieves in there. Stumbled on their music last week and loved it.

The term gypsy style refers to the typical way East European music is played in coffeehouses and restaurants, at parties, and sometimes on-stage, in European cities. Music played in this style is known by the general public as "gypsy music".
Condon( lead singer) is a musical genius IMO. A High school dropout that speaks 5 languages! He traveled to eastern Europe when very young and fell in love "Balkan folk" & "Romainian mountian" music. His style & interpretation is heavier on horns then most traditional "gypsy" music. But to me that along with well timed accordion pieces are what sets them apart and gives them their own sound .
