Today in 1969, The Beatles performed their legendary rooftop concert in London.

They played for the city for 42 minutes before being stopped by the police.

It was John, Paul, George, and Ringo’s final public performance as “The Beatles”.

What a legendary moment.
Yep. 55 years from their last performance and we are still reeling from trying to digest their legacy.

True

They were extremely disorganized in preparation for Get Back, but once they hit that rooftop it was like a switch was flipped.

Btw. John's guitar work on the roof is impeccable.

Yes! I saw Get Back for the first time just recently, and in the "practice" sessions leading up to the rooftop concert, the songs seemed very crude and light years away from finished.

Next thing I know, a week later, they're virtually giving a fricking metal concert on the Apple roof with almost all aspects fully formed. As you mentioned, John is ripping it. Ringo is fricking romping back there. Just amazing. (especially in 48 degrees)

Lost in all of the craziness is the fact that they were a very good band.

Typical stuffy British business guys nearby. Mal Evans did a pretty good job of keeping them at bay for a bit.

This thread has got me on a big beatles kick lately. I don't have any books about them but want to pick one up. Judgin by this thread I've got it narrowed down to

Living the Beatles Legend; Untold Story of Mal Evans by Kenneth Womack

Shout- the beatles in their generation by Philip Norman

Which would be better for an intro? I've listened to the beatles my whole life but don't really know much about the guys themselves aside from the music I hear.

I'm almost finished with this one - you have to read it!

It's fricking unbelievable.

It's weird that he isn't even more known. Talk about having a front row seat.

I now see your actual question and how you haven't read any of the books. For a true first-time reader on the topic, I would do this:

Love Me Do - very short but written by an embedded reporter as they blew up in the UK prior to the US

Yeah Yeah Yeah - if you can find it (seems like it's disappeared from Amazon. It's an incredibly concise overview of their impact.

I always recommend this to newbs:

It's very old but IMHO it's still the best general intro.

One bit of advice: Get a little familiar w/the subject before you read any of the self serving, ax to grind "I was there" memoirs (Emerick & the various Epstein assistants: Peter Brown, Tony Bramwell, etc)

I still enjoyed this one.

What's the deal with there being no real Neil Aspinall bios?

1. Evans left a journal

2. ME had a spectacular, dramatic exit.

NA was apparently tightlipped and kept his secrets

Still, at some point we should get some kind of bio

But it's kind of weird how in all the other books, Mal also seems to just get mentioned more than Neil.

I understand there's been some valid criticism raised about Emerick's book. Would you please opine on what you think of value we can take from it despite those objections?

Is have to read it again which I don't intend to do..

Emerick did produce one of my all time favorite albums, Elvis Costello's Imperial Bedroom, so there's that.

Another source for recording info

Here is another source for a look at the writing and recording of all of their recordings prior to the Anthology stuff.
Emerick is a good resource but has some opinion mixed in.
