RIP John. Hard to believe he's been gone 43 years tomorrow night.
So I started a thread about the anniversary of his death on the OT last night and you'd think that I farted in church.
People really are ignorant.

The sound of the Beatles never repeats.
It’s always different which makes them absurd.

I can appreciate the Beatles and will listen if played but my sister was obsessed. Still is to some degree. I’m more the dead. Cool story Paul came to Nola in the 90s my dad got tickets for my sis sweet 16 and I had to go… since I saved everything I still had the ticket stub. Last year we framed it with the program and gave it to her. She was shocked I still had it.

saw McCartney at the New Orleans arena the last time he was here, my jaw was on the floor. Dude played 30+ songs straight thru without a setbreak, and absolutely kicked arse

I saw him later on the tour and was amazed that he was out there at all. It's like - dude - you're a billionaire. But it just goes to show it's what they do.

I always wonder if some small part of his motivating force isn't still trying to make up for not being a live band during those crucial mid/latter Beatles years.

funny enough he has said that the dead inspired him to get back on the road and play. He was reluctant after Lennon was murdered. One of those “if they can do it I can do it” things. Same thing with Dylan, after he played with the dead he was inspired to start the never ending tour

To me it's crazy to just outright not like them. But even if that's the overall judgment, the output is so varied, it seems hard to believe there's NOTHING to be found of interest.
You kind of summed it up. Throughout the 80s and 90s, 10-15 of their greatest hits were just ubiquitous on FM radio, TV commercials, etc., that it was easy for people who didn't grow up in the Beatles era to tire of them. I would have said I didn't really like them that much.
But as you said, their output was so varied, that one will eventually hear something to like. For instance, I don't think I ever heard Hide Your Love Away until it was picked for an American Idol song in the mid 2000's. There are probably still Beatles songs that would be new to me, and that I might like. The immediacy of streaming content certainly makes it easier to find lesser known tracts and deep cuts now.

Added Sirius XM's The Beatles Channel recently. Glad I did. This one's been bouncing around between my ears for days, now.

This guy just wrote this scathing piece about the post-breakup Beatles. I don't agree with much:
quote:
Their final album, Let It Be, consisted mostly of bad songs, recorded for a ‘back to basics’ project which they had abandoned a year earlier, releasing the far superior Abbey Road (1969) instead. Let It Be’s defects were partially covered up by Phil Spector’s syrupy orchestrations;

Finished the Harrison biography. I had never noticed the lack of his songs on Red and Blue. Turns out it was Alan Klein intentionally screwing him since they were mid lawsuit.

Sgt Peppers is just an unreal piece of work.
I can’t say what else has been said for decades about it, it’s just incredible.
