The whole idea with Nickel Creek was that they were not bluegrass, but a band that took a ton of influences and made it into their own thing, without the jam band syndrome. They wrote great, great songs.

Do you own This Side or Why Should The Fire Die (the last 2 albums they made)? Those are pretty damn far away from bluegrass - can't imagine somebody thinking this sounds remotely close to Sam Bush:

"Progressive bluegrass", "modern bluegrass", etc. were just a bunch of idiotic labels that people used for a band that was totally original. They played bluegrass instruments, though, and people never seemed to get past that.

All that being said, freaking no one sounded like Nickel Creek. I certainly don't think Alison Krauss does, even though she produced 2 of their albums.

I didn't own either album. This was when i was in college and getting my music via Kazaa one song at a time. That said, I downloaded most of the songs on "Nickel Creek" and "This Side"....and that is the stuff I love.

I honestly don't think I've listened to their last album. I was in law school while also working full time when that album came out, and I just wasn't that dialed into new music at all. I may not have even been aware it came out.

Well, I don't wanna say that, 'cause I can't claim to know everything that's out there.

But I certainly hated it when they broke up - I actually went to Nashville to see their final 2 shows as a band, so they meant a helluva lot to me.

Wish I could get into the Punch Brothers as much, but I think it's a really different animal.
