Have any of you had success promoting your band online? I'm in a band that's about to put out a new record by ourselves, without label support - I'm curious how we can "get it out there" digitally so it may be heard by a larger audience. You can easily put it on iTunes, but if nobody knows its there that doesn't do a lot of good.... Just curious if any musicians on the board have any suggestions that have worked. Thanks!

Honestly, the biggest thing is answering the basic questions about your goals and visions, strengths vs weaknesses, and who you want listening to you vs who realistically would be a receptive target.

The most effective tool to market with is a really high quality product. Create the greatest record you possibly can. Don't take shortcuts, don't use the phrase "whatever, that's good enough" -- make it the best you can with the time money and ability you have.

From there, depends on the genre, the target audience, etc.... Get it in the hands of reviewers, bloggers, use your friends on social media as much as you can, play great live shows, and play a lot of them - treat every time you step on a stage like a record exec is in the audience and play your hearts out. Treat every fan like they are the most important person in the room. People will go home and might post about you. It's all about word of mouth and putting a great product in front of as many people as you can.

Network like hell, thank everyone thats ever helped you, twice. Family, to soundguys at venues. be remembered for being the guys that pay it back 10 fold in gratitude and effort whenever you interact with people. seriously, build a loyal support system that likes you and wants to help you again in the future. I know most of that isn't online marketing but a phenomenal album and/or show is what sparks that buzz most.

If you share genre, location, etc... You might get more specific websites and contacts

Be good live. You can have a recent record kick arse live, but you can't have a great record and suck live. Gotta bring it every chance you get.

More importantly, can we hear the music?
