I need some help from the experts here.

I'm buying my first turntable. I'll be using a pair of audioengine A2 speakers that I already own, so I know that I'll need a phono preamp.

I think I'm either down to the TEAC TN-300 ($229) on ebay. This table has a built in preamp.
TN300

My other option is the Uturn Orbit with the built in Pluto phono preamp they offer ($250).

Which turntable would give me the best sound? Should I be looking somewhere else? My budget is in the $200-250 range. Thanks

I have both of these. I do think the TEAC is a better built table. It also has a cueing lever that is handy. From a sound stand, I think they are quite similar to my ears. That said, I hadn't done much side by side on the same setup. U-turn is in my living room on a Marantz 4430 and the Teac is in the office on a little Marantz 2210. I don't think you can go wrong with either. I am getting a bit of squeak from my U-Turn pully at startup, but it doesnt seem to effect the playback. Also, the belt on the Teac is a wider belt vs a large O-ring like on the Uturn.

Thanks for the comparison

I think I'm leaning towards the Teac, but I'm a little worried that the built in phono preamp won't be as nice as the one used by Uturn.

Google "Stereophile Magazine" "Michael Fremer" and "U-Turn"...

Sometime this past year, Mike Fremer, who is the analog guru for Stereophile magazine, did a review of the U-Turn. He gave it very favorable remarks and highly recommended it.

Look for the review and read it.

Anyone have any input on funky jazz albums or artists I can look for?

It's not a genre I'm familiar with but I really like the sound of Herbie Hancock Head Hunters. I tend to like a lot of the funky sounds that Stevie Wonder used as well.

I'm set on buying the U-turn Orbit plus myself. I'm such a novice at this though and I have a question. If I buy the version that has the built in phono preamp, am I going to need anything other than speakers? Also, is there a certain type of speaker? I r newb.

You should be able to just plug into your speakers if it has a built in phono pre amp. The type of speaker is personal preference but I have some Klipsch speakers and really like them.

You might like Sun Ra, Snarky Puppy, or Miles Davis.

Well you will need an amplifier of some sort. Either a stereo receiver with aux inputs or a set of powered speakers. The phono preamp only boosts it enough for an amplifier to pick up the sound an amplify it to listening volume.

gotcha.

I wish I could find a set of good looking white speakers that weren't 250 bucks. I have a set up aesthetic in mind that I'm trying to keep up with . Will probably just settle for some black ones.

If you like that brand of jazz, pickup whatever Weather Report albums you can find. There are ton of them out there for cheap. Also: Billy Cobham, George Duke, Grover Washington Jr., and Larry Coryell.

You would probably dig a lot of the funk-soul organ stuff too. Seek out any Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, and Brother Jack McDuff you can.

The above album is Stanley Clarke and George Duke and is called "The Clark/Duke Project".

It is a really great sounding funk/groove jazz record done around 1981.

I need some turntable feet for my Marantz 6300. All original parts that I've seen on ebay are way more than I was expecting ($80-$100). I'm used to buying feet for receivers, which usually only run about $20-30 for a set. Does anyone know a good source to get good feet for a reasonable price?

Do they need to screw into the base of the table?

I had a good music day today so I thought I would share it with the fellow music board regulars.

This afternoon a customer of mine that knows I am into audio/music says to me over lunch that he has a collection of around 300 or so LPs that he wants to be rid of as he is moving to a new home and no longer wants to deal with them.

He offers them to me and I pick them up from his place later in the afternoon.

I must say that this is quite a gift. When people usually unload their collections on me, those collections are usually in bad shape and filled with multiple LPs from the likes of Barbara Streisand, Seals & Crofts, and Dan Fogelberg (to name a few). I usually end up keeping about 5 records and trash the rest (they are junk).

Today was different...

This haul was a fantastic smathering of classic rock, prog Rock, and funk/Jazz covering 1965 to about 1985.

From the Turtles and Herman's Hermits to Floyd, Stones, Allmans, Rundgren, Beatles, CSN&Y, Hendrix, Tull, Vanilla Fudge, Ten Years After, Spooky Tooth, ZZ Top, REO Speedwagon, Taj Mahal, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, Kraftwerk, Hank Williams, Randy Newman, Dr. John, Aretha, Arlo Guthrie, the Kinks, Jimmy Smith, Keith Jarrett, Marley, Derrik and the Dominos, Horace Silver, Lou Reed, Leon Russel, Poco, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Procol Harum, Curtis Mayfield, Santana, Moody Blues, the Who...

...and on, and on, and on.

I already own about 100 of the 300 in the lot. However, there are a bunch of records that I probably wouldn't buy just because I really don't know anything about that particular album, but now that I have them will give a listen to.

Also, many of these are first pressings (I checked some of the serials etched into the space after the lead out groove to verify this).

Example : I always wanted to get into Todd Rundgren's psychedelic stuff but never knew where to begin. There are 9 Rundgren LPs in this lot!

Here is the icing on the cake--he used a Dual Turntable with a decent Ortofon cart, so the record grooves weren't destroyed by a crappy needle (which is often the case in gifted/unwanted LPs). They are in excellent condition, and the covers are all good too.

Here is a pic of the lot...

I suppose I will post a few pics of the albums as I start to play through them.
