I will use the 1,000th reply to this thread to provide an update on albums and equipment since my last update in January. Saving this spot.

The Drive-By Truckers live box is sitting under the tree and I just preordered the Black Crowes reissues. It seems as though they are actually going to happen but I will still believe it when FedEx knocks on the door.

I just acquired a Marantz 6300 Turntable. I got it for only $75 and it was in decent shape. Just needed some cleaning and needs a new dust cover, since the current one is pretty scratched up and has a 4 inch crack near the hinges.

I love that it has a built in strobe so it's easy to adjust the speed to make sure everything is perfect.

Very nice, and a steal for that price. I bought a replacement dust cover on Ebay for my PL-560. I think it was about $100. It doesn't have the Pioneer logo but it looks great.

Nice find there SUB!

I had a Pioneer PL-41 table that my uncle brought back from Vietnam that I used off and on for about 10 years or so. I had the bearing rebuilt and got new belts. I even had the original box!

I put a Sumiko Blue Point cartridge on it ($400), and got some great sound out of it. It was a heavy table.

About 4 years ago I lent it to a guy that was a Tulane Law student as he was a struggling young student interested in hifi. I also lent him a Pro-Ject Tube Box phono stage ($600) and some decent interconnects ($300).

After 6 months the little fricker left town and sold it all on AudioGon.
He got me for around $1500.

That's what I get for being a nice guy.

Little does he know that a good friend of mine is in the process of putting a lein on him.
It's not the money--it's the fact that I helped him when he needed a start and then he screwed me.

Oh well.

Here are some pics of all the stuff he stole from me...

Not to mention a nice record clamp and about 5 180g LPs...

As far as CD players go--what are some key things to look for? Is it acceptable to use a bluray or DVD player to play CDs or would you recommend buying a separate unit? Might be able to get an old (maybe 10-12years) Denon single well CD player/burner. Would this be a better option?

logjamming...

If you are looking to kill a few birds with one stone, it is really hard to beat the Oppo BD103 multi player. It plays every type of disc known, and does it extremely well. It also has a digital input that allows its DAC to be used by another source (such as a computer). It's DAC will also decode DSD and DXD ( extreme high resolution files--think SACD) if you ever have the inclination to download such a file.

The blu Ray player is no slouch on video either. This player consistently ranks at the top with audiophiles in the $1500 and below category---and it costs about $500.

Also, just wanted some insight into the dedication it takes to listsen to 77 discs of Phish. I'm not a huge fan, but I get the appeal. Do you try to find the best "take" for each song or pull out the oddballs? Also, are these pro recordings or bootlegs?

logjamming...

All Phish shows are taken from the main sound board in high resolution. They are mixed and mastered in about 24 hours after a show and may be downloaded in 24bit/96k, or bought on CD packaged in custom cases for each show. The sound quality is nothing short of spectacular on either format. They have it down to a science now.

There were 25 shows this summer tour (if I remember correctly)--so 25 complete shows on 77 CDs--roughly 3 CDs per show.

Every show has a highlight...

A few examples...

Charlotte, N.C. saw "Llama" played in a slow, funky sorta way for the first time ever...
Atlanta saw a 25 minute all out assault on "Tweezer"...
Watkins Glen, NY saw "Prince Caspian" really jammed for the first time ever (20 years)...
Bend, OR saw the intro of 3 new tunes...
Bend, OR night 2 saw the intro of 2 more new tunes...
Commerce City, CO saw the first "Landlady" in over 20 years...
Nashville, TN saw "Mike's Song" with the extremely rare second solo (15 year absence)
Tuscaloosa, AL saw a rare, and awesome "Seven Below"...
Philly, PA saw the tour's only "Scents & Subtle Sounds"...
Columbia, MD opened with "Sleeping Monkey"--usually done as an encore closer...

These are just a few examples.

When I listen, I will put a disc in and play the entire thing knowing that a certain jam or different version of a song is in that particular show. The other songs are all good too, and kind of set the tone for the "special treatment" of the upcoming song or two that get it for that night.

They will always do something at every show that sets it apart from all other shows. It is not just a changing set list but the songs within that set list get played differently sometimes.

Every show always has a memorable aspect...

I know Phish isn't your cup of tea, but you may want to give New Years Eve 1995 from Madison Square Garden a test drive. It is ranked by the Phans as one of the top 5 shows ever. It was released on a 3 CD set about 10 years ago, 6 LP vinyl box six months ago, and is readily available in hi-rez download.

Try it out--something on that album just may catch your ear!

Also file a grievance with his state bar. Good chance he'll have to inform all of his clients and he could be disbarred. You could also file formal theft charges if the SOL hasn't run.

I'll definitely give it a listen. I should qualify it as, I'm not a Phish "hater", but I've never seen them live and haven't really gotten into them in depth--though Billy Breathes is a good album and really my only exposure to them.

Also, thanks for the info on the CD player.

Looks like all the Black Crowes LP reissues are FINALLY hitting the streets...they were only delayed 5 years!!

Shake Your Money Maker and The Southern Harmony hit stores on the 14th of this month, with the others coming in January.

My 3rd phish show at Thompson-Bolling arena in 2009. Was a great show.

Greetings, Marco. I followed some advice you gave me a while back and got myself an Ortofon Bronze for Xmas. It just came in and it doesn't fit the headshell I have. I'm guessing my safest bet is an Ortofon headshell, I'd like to go with the SH-4. Is there any reason to think it won't fit? I keep reading that it works with the red or blue but nothing on the bronze. I'm dying to get this thing hooked up.

This is the best pic I have available at the moment. You need a closeup of the headshell?

Yes. Give me a few close ups--from top, side, and bottom.

What brand is the tonearm? Model # of the tonearm?

Also, if you are in Greater New Orleans, I can set it up for you if needed. I have all the tools to get VTF, VTA, Azimuth, and SRA adjustments dead on.

Also--the Ortofon Red, Blue, Bronze, and Black are all identical in size. If you can mount the Red, you can mount all the others.

Awesome. That would be much appreciated. I'm in the Marigny.
