Where do you guys purchase your vinyl? Everything I have is original or close to original pressings but there are some obvious holes I'd like to fill and I want to beef up my collection.

I've found Amazon (duh!), SoundStageDirect and Acoustic Sounds so far which seem like solid sites to source albums.

Thanks!

Read the fine print. It's amazing to read those words and see the revival that vinyl is having now.

I've mostly used Amazon so that I could capitalize on the free digital copies that they often sell with them for car use.

But if there's a modern day Columbia House for vinyl, I sure would like to know about it!

Local: Euclid Records

Mail order: Music Direct, Acoustic Sounds, ElusiveDisc (one may have things the other doesn’t—Acoustic Sounds has some hard to find MoFi originals...albeit at a price)

Other cities: Amoeba in Los Angeles (I go at least once a year). Rasputin in Berkeley. I also will try to find a shop in other cities when I travel.

I have slowed down a good bit on buying LPs. There was a period from 2008-2014 when I was consistently picking up around 30 new LPs every month. Add that to the 2500 or so that I already had, and well, you do the math.

It gets to the point where there aren’t enough hours in a lifetime to listen to a fraction of what’s out there. I also find that I gravitate to playing the things I really like multiple times. Some LPs, though, have been played just once—bought them on a whim or suggestion and they really didn’t do anything for me (I’m looking at you, Wilco).

I still enjoy going to a record store, but like to pick up maybe a couple LPs a month—things I heard my dad playing when I was a kid in the ‘70’s (early R&B from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s) and some Doo Wop. Most of that will be a find in the used section.

Thanks for the response. Right now I want to fill in obvious holes in my collection. I also have quite a nice number of CDs. I remember my grandfather putting on music and just laying on the floor to listen to it when I was a kid. However, that doesn't make me want to go out and purchase Mario Lanza albums. My dad really wasn't into music.

I wish I still had my old 45's. My mom worked at a radio station in the 60's and used to bring home demo 45's for me. Sadly, when I went off to college she did a spring cleaning and decided they weren't worth keeping. You can only imagine what gems were in there and they were.

Yeah all the sites listed above plus Discogs. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s sort of an EBay for music. It’s been a really helpful tool over the years for purchasing out of print albums, or specific pressings of albums. I’ve only had a couple of bad experiences with sellers over the past several years (and only one required me to file a claim with PayPal). A lot of the sellers on there are record shops.

Sadly I don’t have great local record shops where I live. At best, small sections in used book stores. If you live in a town/city with a great shop I recommend going to them first, then the internet. I always try to hit up a couple stores when I travel.

I have an old technics 1500 DD that doesn't get up to speed at 33 rpm. Went inside it and sprayed all the pots and switches and gave em a good twisting and got the 45 up to speed, but 33 still lagging. Is it time to get a pro involved? Is it worth it?

Good news is I have a twin that I had basically forgotten about, gave it the same treatment and it's bang on.

A turntable is probably in the near future for me. The Pioneer Had to be reset to get it start a couple of nights ago.

I am listening to the greatest ‘70’s rock song ever...it has it all—lyrics involving women and drug references, cowbell, funky bass solo, keyboard/synth jam, small drum solo, great vocal harmonizing, and a great guitar riff....all done in 5 minutes!!

Seriously—that song has it all!

It was one of those classic rock songs that would come on the radio every now and again over the years and I just kinda half listened—just another ‘70’s rock tune blaring away on the radio.

...but then, one day while driving across the Causeway bridge, it hit me, and I turned it up, and it just got better and better. When it ended, I thought, “man, those guys were friggin rockin’ it!”

Now it is in my top 10 of rock songs.

Give it a full listen—there’s a lot going on in there (by a ‘70’s 5-minute rock song standard)
