TIDAL is $20/month, but will push a 16 bit/44.1k sample rate, which is what a redbook CD is. You can stream it from a computer using the USB input.

You can also download a "player" that can be used on your computer, such as Pure Music, Audirvana, or Amarra. They all do basically the same thing--pass a hi-rez signal (up to DSD/DXD now--SACD resolution), through to the DAC.

The player in iTunes will only pass a CD quality at most...while iTunes will store a hi-rez FLAC file up to 24 bit/192k, it won't play it back (Apple for ya!)--so in order to play higher resolution files you may download from sites such as Acoustic Sounds or other hi-res purchase sites, you will need a better "player" on the computer. It essentially "boots out" the Apple player while using iTunes as a library only.

The 3 I mentioned above are around $50 to download.

Sweet... watching that on the new tv?

Speaking of that... I’ve been putting that off for a while (since I got the granite from you). Wife finally told me it was time... but she put a budget on it, so I can’t roll the A1E. Think I’m going to get the LG 55”OLED C7.

Projector screen (112") is what you see in the pics.

The A1E is in the den.

Ah... getting the full experience with that. Ha.

Man prolly 2k and a 55”... anything any bigger will swallow my living area. Most of the TVs seem to be on sale right now... I guess with the 18s starting to come out. Best Buy has the LG C7 at $1699 I think and the 55” A1E at $2499... again both on sale though. Both are right at that on amazon as well.

Yeah, thanks for that original link. I was able to end up getting it for 2425, and decided I couldn’t pass it up considering Marco said if it could be had for around 65% of msrp it was a good deal, and this was more like 54%. The guy said he had higher offers earlier on but thought it would go for more so held off, and I guess he just decided to go with my offer because it had been up a while and was probably ready to be done with it. I honestly think he would have gotten more had he just taken better pictures.

Hey Marco,

one last question. so i'm thinking about purchasing a digital media streamer to take advantage of the mac's DAC, and i'm wondering if you have any recommendations?

The majority of my digital listening these days is from Spotify or other streaming services. I haven't really listened to my media files, spread out across multiple hard drives, in a long time. So given that, for the best sound quality would you recommend purchasing something like the bluesound node 2, a Tidal subscription and connecting that to the mac's DAC? I know streaming from my computer is always an option, but for the ease of use, and having the digital streamer always plugged in ready to go i'm leaning towards that.

And of those media streamers i've sort of narrowed it down to the logitech squeezebox touch, spotify connect and the bluesound node 2...and leading towards the node 2. any other recs?

Also, i can't seem to find a consensus on the better connection, dig coax or optical?

You might need to set up some sort of account so we can pay you for your advice.

Easy now.....

Actually interested in this as well... I killed my Mac with coffee and only have my iPad right now and just run the Spotify Prem through that and my iPhone. Haven’t bought music through ITunes in a while. I know there are better ways of accessing the digital music... I just haven’t taken the time to figure it out.

As always....budget?

With that, there are as many "music streamers/players" out there now as grains of sand on a beach. Some seem to be more popular than others (some because of good marketing). Some are great values, some are not (McIntosh's player is a horrible value--$6500 and it's built in DAC can't accept an external source...so you need an additional DAC in the system to connect any other digital source! Only the die-hard fan boys buy them to match the rest of the gear.)

Part of what makes a good player is the computer/iPad interface--how you index and control all of your music services you may subscribe to, and your local HDD. Some are more intuitive than others. As with anything, it takes some use to get used to whatever one you finally choose.

You may also want to get one that has popular services already loaded into the player--TIDAL, Rhapsody, LivePhish, Nugs, etc. Some players are also "Roon Ready"--meaning that they can accept the Roon music indexing system as as an add-on (Roon is $500 and is the Bugatti of indexing/library systems).

Some lesser players will only go up to 24/96 resolution (which is pretty high), while the costlier ones will play back DSD and DXD. Some players have built in DACs, while others don't. Some can play and decode MQA files as well.

I would just start out with a simple player that can do 24/192k resolution, and has the ability to be Roon Ready, and has TIDAL and a few other current popular music services pre loaded.

I have been waiting for years to pull the trigger on one as there has been a major component missing in all of these music players--a built in browser. If you want to go to HD Tracks and download a hi-rez album, you still need a computer somewhere in the chain to be able to get to the Internet to do so. Then you need to drag and drop that file into your music library for the player to be able to play it.

Finally, someone came out with a music player that has a built in browser, streams Hi-Rez audio AND video (4K), can be customized to have any music apps (rhapsody, TIDAL, LivePhish, etc.) built in, as well as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and any others you may need. The company is Wolf Audio. In the next few weeks, I am pulling the trigger on an Alpha 2/Power Level 2. By using this, it will eliminate the need to have a computer in the system.

Wolf Audio may be out of your price range, but read up on their site and you will get a better idea of what features a fully functional streamer can offer. Their base model Cub is not too expensive.

Look at Aurender--they offer many models in many price ranges. Bryston makes a couple good players and can usually be found used on AGon.

I'll try to update this list this evening with a few more.

Yeah, should have listed budget. Definitely in the below $500 category. Just want a simple player that can connect to the amp and deliver higher resolution audio from streaming sites that provide it. At the moment i have no desire to setup my own library of existing music files i have. Just simply to stream music and listen to the occasional radio station through tunein.

Looking at the Bluesound Node 2 it covers all of the things you mentioned, except for the browser, but for what i do that isn't an issue at this point. So I'm leaning towards it i suppose.

FInally just wondering the best method to connect the device to the amp, dig. coax or optical?

Probably USB or Coax. Sometimes USB will pass a higher resolution than Coax, but nowadays, I believe all will pass at least a 24/96 resolution (CD is 16/44.1)
