Need some turntable recs please. While I consider myself a serious audiophile, it's been solely on digital front. I would like to dip my toe in the pure analog water to see how I like it. Some may scoff at my budget given my other equipment, but I want to make sure I am "in to" it before dropping a ton of cash. So, I would love to get some recs for entry level turntable that is a good enough player to give me an idea of what good analog sounds like.

So, I went entry level and found a decent turntable on craigslist and gave myself a Christmas present. Ended up getting an U-Turn Orbit Plus for 125 on CL. Had my AV vendor come out to the house on Tuesday and run appropriate wires from wall plate to AV closet and put in a wall plate with 5 inputs. 2 RCA MM connections, 2 RCA CM connections, and a ground wire connection. All run to the McIntosh C2500.

I was skeptical of the vinyl sound, but I will admit that the sound is richer compared to the same albums on CD. Regarding albums, I started with:

Gary Clark Jr: Black & Blu
B-52's: The B-52's
Arctic Monkeys: AM
Stone Temple Pilots: Core
Stone Temple Pilots: Purple
Black Keys: Attack & Release
John Lee Hooker: What's My Story
Albert King: Born Under a Bad Sign
Oasis: Definitely Maybe
Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense
Guns 'N Roses: Appetite for Destruction
Jack White: Lazaretto

I love my P5 and can’t say enough good things about it. It has many features as Marco said, and the clarity and detail this thing puts out is pretty special to my ears. You get a whole bunch of options, all in one unit.

Is an old Sanyo Music Station any good ? Looks like it has a TT tape deck receiver and 2 ss-605 or something speakers.

Hey Marco, I picked up a couple of records from Elusive Disc - first buys there. Bought Willie Nelson The Redheaded Stranger, Michel LeGrand Jazz and The Sound of Music Original Movie Soundtrack - Incredible quality pressings, Almost enjoyed the packaging and looking at the records as much as listening (almost). Great recommendation for a place to buy records from.

BigPapi,

I've been dealing with Sam at Elusive for years. I actually call them and place orders rather than online order. Good folks.

I've been out of town since I first posed this question, but here's what I've done.

quote:

First, plug it directly into an outlet all on its own (doesn't have to be permanent, just to test). Have no other motors or lights on the same circuit as the turntable motor. Most turntable motors spin at a constant rpm that is based off a 60Hz sine wave coming out of the socket. If that is fluctuating a good bit, it can affect speed.

I first tried plugging it into the outlet directly but that didn't work so i tried taking it to an entirely different outlet and it still had no effect.

quote:

How far off is it speedwise?

It's playing very fast. Imagine Alvin and the chipmunks playing/singing Pearl Jam.

quote:

Have you checked it with another belt?

Haven't checked it with another belt yet. On my to do list. Maybe im just ignorant but idk why the band being loose would make it play faster though. Any insight is appreciated.

What is the model of the table? I'll look up some things about it.

U-turn orbit plus. Just over two years old.

Thanks

Is it on the wrong pulley on the motor?...like the 45 rpm pulley?

I’m assuming you have the belt properly secured to the top notch of the belt drive? When I first got my Uturn i accidentally set it up on the lower notch, which is for 45 RPM records.

That's the problem. I didn't notice bc the belt is so stretch out but when we moved my wife set it up and put it on the lower notch. I'm guessing that is also why it's so stretched.

Ugh. Oh well at least I know what it is haha.

The belt is designed to go down there as well. When you put it back it might be a little slacked for a second or two but once you turn it on, it should settle in.

I saw that you said it was 2 years old. If I remember correctly, their website recommends replacing it after so many hours of playing time. The replacement belts are $5 on their online store

Finally got my surround sound set up. Listening to the Steven Wilson 5.1 mix of Discipline by King Crimson. Holy hell this is magnificent.

Running a GoldenEar SuperCinema 3D array sound bar through a Marantz NR1508 with an Original Acoustics in ceiling sub. This sound bar makes my ears happy.

Replying to TigerRob. I have a pair of the JBL-LSR305 speakers on stands as my computer speakers. I was not disappointed with the purchase and they are overkill for what I need them for. I included the matching JBL sub since I bought the 305's. If I would do it again, I would strongly consider getting the larger ones (308's I think) without the sub.
