Anyone remember record clubs?

Buy 10 albums for 1 penny and agree to buy 8 more over the next 2 years or so?
The album thread got me thinking about this.
I built a collection of over 200 albums with the help of these clubs.
Assuming the whole downloading music thing has rendered them obsolete...

Hell yeah.
That's how I started my cd collection.
And....yes, I would imagine they are obsolete.

I'd use fake names in college to sign up about everytime I changed apartments.
Norm Peterson and Cliff Clavin.
I probably have about 30 cd's with the BMG stamp on the back.

My mom used to get cassette tapes for us when we were kids through these clubs. The ones I can remember off hand were:
Charlie Daniels Band - Million Mile Reflections

KISS - Dynasty

I had always heard that cassettes weren't that great of quality from those clubs. So, when cds came out, I figured how can they screw that up?
And they didn't. I found that the cds I got were the same as any I bought in stores. No nothing on the case or booklet.
And people used to say, "Yeah but you gotta buy 8 in 2 years."
The stuff I was buying was about 10-15 bucks maybe?
So all in all, it probably came out to about 50 cents to a dollar on average for the whole batch.
Then, I'd cancel and then rejoin a few months later.
Always used my real name and never had a problem.

Same here.
Boy, when that initial box of cds finally arrived in the mail... wowza!
Of course, things really sucked after that when you actually had to pay retail for the rest of the cds under your contract.
