Chris Carraba's band before Dashboard Confessional? Reunited last year and their new album, Penny Black, dropped a few weeks ago.
If you didn't like Dashboard, then they aren't for you.

Oh man. I'm definitely gonna have to check this out. Three weeks ago I rediscovered Dashboard and remembered how amazing it was if you're into that kind of thing. It's definitely a "This is where you are in life" kind of thing.
ETA: This seems more FSF than Dashboard. Lyrically it strikes that chord, but musically it just doesn't resonate with that same "My life is depressing note" that made Dashboard a hit within its era. This seems more like the Spiderman song Dashboard did than stuff like "The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most." The latter is immensely superior, in my opinion. Doesn't mean that this is bad, it just doesn't quite resonate in the same way, and if I'm gonna flip to Dashboard on my iPod I want that shite to be incredibly depressing.

I liked The Moon Is Down, and The Places You Have Come Fear the Most. Everything after that was meh, from both artists.
That said, I will have to give this one a proper go. Although early reviews seem to indicate that Chris's voice is overproduced on this one.

the raw emotion in his voice is what made the old stuff good.

Didn't he legitimately just start crying in a few songs?
I went through a DC and Get Up Kids phase for like 4 days once, but I just couldn't do it.
