I'm trying to add instruments and sounds to the group of guys I play with and can see interesting possibilities with lap steel. It's a relatively inexpensive instrument and from what I've read techniques of dobro can be applied to lap steel.

How would you compare the learning curve versus a guitar or bass? Easier? Harder?

Thank you in advance for any thoughts or insights.

I have a Lap steel that I play around with some. I don't claim to be even average on it. I don't spend enough time on it.
It's pretty easy though, since you will just use open tunings. remember not to over do it.A little bit at the right place goes a long way.
The more tunings you learn, the better use you can put it to.

That's what I would be hoping to accomplish with it - filling out background sound.

I'm currently doing that on harmonica, but am looking to expand.

So you feel it's an easier to play than most stringed instruments?

Mechanically speaking, yes, but it's something you have to have an ear for.
They aren't expensive, may as well give it a shot.

I have a post-WWII Rickenbaker Tuxedo but I'm in auggies situation almost exactly. I need to spend more time with it and get better. It's tons of fun but I've been preoccupied with fingerstyle acoustic guitar and there are only so many hours in a day for practice.

Damn, that is nice! I think I would spend more time if I had that one.

I have a fiberglass chinese Gretcsh (sp?) metalflake silver,I bought it for 70 bucks,it actually sounds OK though.

Thanks, it's criminal how I neglect it. I need to put together a signal chain for it, get a stand and that might motivate me to give it some love. It sounds really good but if you can find a pre-WWII model, they have the fatter pickups and sound even better.

What kind of steel do you use? I have been using a dobro-style steel because I feel like the shape gives me better control over it.

It's a cheap Gretcsh fiberglass rectangular shape 1,dual coil Pup. Mylar fretboard. The previous owner wrote all the chords for open G tuning on the mylar with a pink sharpie.

I gave 70 bucks for it,and it sounds OK.

Oh, you mean the slide? I use a dobro type also. rounded on the end.

How to properly use a lap steel guitar:

Larkin Poe

Dazed and Confused - Led Zeppelin

Nessun Dorma - Jeff Beck

The Thrill is Gone - BB King

Wade In the Water - Also shows how badass a mandolin can sound!!!

Obviously this isn't really true.

Just the cost of entry precludes all but semi-professionals from even messing around with pedal steel.

And, like almost everything to do with guitar - it is about the player, not the equipment. David Lindley, finna be 74 years old, can play the entire music board off the stage with whatever lap steel you hand him.

Most slide players start with a regular electic (usually humbuckers) or a dobro, progress to lap then try pedal (and usually love it). Hell, Skydog got a lot of mileage out of a Les Paul and a Coricidin medicine bottle.

David Lindley can shame any of us with any random stringed instrument he happens to have handy. And if you want to hear a lap steel part that will make you weak in the knees, listen to Running On Empty.

Yeah. That's why I won't be a man any time soon.

$1500 for used pedal vs. less than $200 for new lap is no contest for a 1st timer.
