Long story less long, my pops passed and I have an older banjo he use to play that I’d really like to pick up for sentimental reasons

Thing is, I can’t say im a huge bluegrass fan but grew up around it and definitely appreciate the sound. Any recs that you fellas could turn me onto that I could get into would be very appreciated. I’m sure there’s some pickers around today that’d inspire me to pick it up. Thanks

What's BETTER than one banjo

two (Sweet Sunny South - Jerry Garcia & David Grisman )
And then you have 'Old and In The Way". And of course Bella Fleck.

Listen to Bela Fleck. He does things on the Banjo that will blow your mind, and at least get your banjo juices flowing. He'll make you think about the Banjo in a different way.

Also, Tony Trischka.

Even if you’re not a huge bluegrass fan, you will become one if you start playing and studying the greats. Start with Earl Scruggs and Ralph Stanley. Then follow the lineage.. JD Crowe, Bill Keith, Bela Fleck, Noam Pikelny. There are tons of others, but those are some of the big ones.

Bella fleck will make you not even wanna pick up the banjo haha. I wanted to play mandolin and accidentally listened to some of Chris Thile’s stuff and same thing happened

If you want a banjo influence closer to home both geographically and genre-wise, look up Don Vappie in New Orleans. Don is one of my shop clients, a very good friend and as incredible of a person as he is a musician.
