On this day in 1971.”American Pie” was recorded by Don McLean in New York. But was not released until the following November....

One of the most abstract but well written songs in history. Almost everyone over 45 should know the lyrics......

it's on my shite list w/ Hotel California, Margaritaville, Sweet Home Alabama, and any songs by Meatloaf and REO Speedwagon.

Don't even put Neil Diamond in a category in association with American Pie - Neil is greatness. I see why people like the song but it's punch out for me.

The only thing Jimmy has in common with Neil is they were on the same label (MCA at one point) and they make a killing performing live

I’m good for an American pie listen through once or twice a year, but just because a song is extremely long and talk about lots of things does not make it inherently good.

I’m not getting the hate for American Pie, it’s a great song. As for being overplayed, maybe in the past but what are people listening to that it’s over played now? I honestly can’t remember the last time I heard it “on the radio” let alone multiple times
