Side note on this: They say that Mark Knopfler just plugged right into Gilmour's guitar rig for his part, and still sounded just like he always does.

While the adage about tone being all in the fingers is a bit overstated, there's a lot of truth to it.

Put their guitar and rig in the hands of many accomplished players and they wont sound the same.

I saw Willie Nelson walk onto an Austin City limits show. Roger Miller was playing a Telecaster, and offered it to Willie, who strapped it on. Sounded exactly like he does when he plays that old gut string.

In that Country Music documentary, it was basically said that Miller was the biggest pillhead in Nashville. His manager told someone that Miller hadn't slept in two years.

I missed that part of the documentary. I believe it though.
Whatever he did, it worked, because he damn sure had an imagination.
