Their new album Resolution is amazing.

I was very disappointed in it myself. Only one song was I was really entertained by. I LOVED their first few albums, but the last two were just kinda meh to me.

I'm on board with all of this listing except the last two.

Although I must admit I've never been a huge fan of Megadeth either. Mustaine's vocals always just make me

Uh, Why do you not like metal? You like Iron Maiden, but you don't like metal? Does not compute.

As you can see I gravitate towards a lot of progressive and symphonic metal bands

No Queensryche?

I've been on a German Power Metal kick lately:

Helloween (Frickin' love them)
Blind Guardian
Edguy
Primal Fear
Gamma Ray
Hammerfall

I like their older stuff. Their newer stuff is kinda meh. Operation Mindcrime is epic.

Geoff Tate has killer vocals!

How did you leave out by far the best band and one of the originators of the genre? Deftones, anyone?

I'm picky about true power metal. Sometimes they get so fast that they loose the heaviness and/or fall into cheesy territory. To be fair progressive metal does the same thing and it's one of my favorite sub-genres of metal.

I think Blind Guardian is my favorite power metal group followed by Helloween. I have mixed views of Gamma Ray. I want to like them more than I do. I find myself liking particular songs, but never entire albums like I do with Blind Guardian and Helloween.

I'm not as familiar with Primal Fear or Hammerfall so I can't make any real judgements. For some reason I've never been a huge Edguy fan. Not sure why, but they never strike me.

Two other bands that I enjoy a lot, but I never hear metal heads speak too much about are Adagio and Angel Dust. Anyone ever give them a listen? Both are prog/power metal type of bands.

You pretty much summed up my feelings on those bands, except I know Hammerfall and Primal Fear.

Primal Fear is incredible. If you can get past the Judas Priest sound alike. To me...that is a good thing.

Helloween is by far my favorite. Keeper of the 7 Keys I is an all-time favorite album of mine, of any genre.

Yeah. they were great early on, later stuff isn't worth much. Could say that for a lot of bands though.

Fair enough, but I often expect more from lesser known sub-genres of metal like Prog Metal. They often don't have the same corporate pressures that headlining bands such as Metallica have.

I would use stronger language.
Queensryche's current stuff, say...anything after Promised Land...is garbage.

And that's coming from one of their biggest fans.
Or at least, used to be.

Do ever venture over to prog metal? Sometimes it's hard to define the difference between prog and power metal as they often borrow a lot from each other.

There isn't man bands in any genre that I appreciate more than one or two albums with the possible exception of Pink Floyd. For Queensryche, I am a fan of everything up to Empire, and the rest is pretty shitty. Most groups lose creativity and compromise later in their career IMO. Your sound gets old, even to established fans and bands lose passion

I like only elements of prog metal, but not as a genre.
I can appreciate the musicianship, but I can't listen to 11-13 minute songs, all the time. That's just my personal preference.

A long epic song on an album should be special. Like say, Rime of the Ancient Mariner or Halloween on Keepers, Part 1.

I loved Fates Warning and Queensryche up until they both went almost full on prog.

Not really a fan of all these genres and sub genres that we have come up with. Funny, when Queensryche first came out many people thought they were a speed metal band.

I appreciate hard, darker rock regardless of how it's classified.

Wow. Honestly, I've never heard them described as speed metal.
And I remember when I just read a blurb in a metal mag about them releasing their EP, and being a band "to look out for".
