Alice In Chains: Unplugged

I know AiC has been discussed here, probably ad nauseam. Having been a grunge/alternative rock fan my entire life, I simply can't come up with the words to describe just how ethereal this performance is.
Between Layne and Chris (Cornell), I’m just not sure vocals, lyrics, melody, and passion get any better. Down in a Hole has an especially sensitive place in my heart. Layne birthday was just over a week ago, and I daresay a week doesn’t go by without listening to or playing one of their tunes.
Pay attention to 2:19 where Jerry gives a smug wink of “I told ya so.” It gets me every time.

I love Cornell, but I'd pick Layne over him as a singer and songwriter. Both are awesome and died way too soon, especially Layne.

AIC Jar of Flies is a masterpiece.

I remember when Layne walked out for that show everyone was like, "oh, shite...he cut his hair". He always had a mop before unplugged.

By far the best unplugged show, IMO.

Love AIC but Layne's isn't comparable to Chris'. Don't get me wrong it works for AIC but he's not even in the same universe as Chris Cornell.

What most dont realize about AIC was receiving air play before the other grunge bands. They were classified as heavy metal when Man In The Box came out. Teen Spirit happened and they were reclassified as grunge.
In reality they left the way for Seattle sound, not Nirvana.

I waver on whether or not Cornell was outright better or it was more of a 1a/1b situation. I think there is little question that both were better vocalists than, say Weiland or Vetter, and all 4 of those were better vocalists than Cobain.
Where does Andrew Wood, who clearly influenced/affected them all fit - I guess that's the missing one, right?

Soundgarden had a recording contract before any of them.

What song did Soundgarden put out before Man In The Box got serious airplay?

I love some MLB, but they weren't played alot until the grunge thing happened. I give all of the songs on the MLB album a 10/10. It was a masterpiece.

I suspect you're going to use "serious airplay" to dismiss anything I say - but it is indisputable that Soundgarden already had their indie record (Ultramega OK/SST) AND a major label album (Louder than Love/A&M) before AIC even started recording Facelift (maybe before they had signed a recording contract). Nirvana's debut Bleach was also released before recording even started on Facelift (which was in December 1989).
The suits made the decision that grunge was something they could sell sometime in 1991 and that's when all 3 bands started having noticeable commercial success (Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger, their third studio album, Nirvana's Nevermind, their second studio album and AIC's Facelift, their debut studio album, were all released in 1991 - that's not a coincidence).
But Soundgarden was older and signed (and signed by a major label) before the others - I stand by that.
Man in the Box did end up being the second most played single of the 1990s (after Smells Like Teen Spirit).
Soundgarden wasn't even a singles band until Black Hole Sun and even then...

Louder Than Love was released almost a full year before Facelift. “Hands All Over” got considerable airplay on MTV when it was released.
ETA: Soundgarden - Hands All Over

Rusty Cage is the song that comes to mind as my first experience with Soundgarden.

Never even charted in the United States (neither did Jesus Christ Pose). Outshined was #45 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart and the only BMF single to chart in the U.S.

Excellent find! I dont even remember it. That was probably labeled metal until Teen spirit.

“Not even in the same universe” in extremely strong, imo
Vetter/Weiland aren’t in the same universe as Staley/Cornell.
I can see Staley/Cornell as an interchangeable 1a and 1b. At least they are for me, depending on the day.
