I think they're both great and it's a matter of personal preference when it comes to vocals. However, Jerry Cantrell is (and was) the main songwriter for AIC. Layne did some amazing things with vocals, but didn't exhibit the same songwriting prowess as Cornell. Of course he didn't have nearly as much time to do so either.
