Remember, though, that there are two different modes of musicianship: the interpretive and the creative.

There are way too many of the first type, and not nearly enough of the 2nd type.

One of my favorite moments that showcased this difference between two kinds of guitar players was when my band was trying to learn “Cult of Personality” by In Living Colour. Our lead player spent countless hours studying tab and practicing to learn how to play it exactly like the record, which requires a lot of hand movement and some significant stretches. He couldn’t believe when I walked into practice after playing around with it for less than an hour and nailed all the notes using a completely different, much simpler, method that I came up with after listening to it.

I barely had to move my hand at all, and it changed the tone of the song somewhat, giving the notes a more twangy quality, which angered the interpretive musician in my lead player. However, all of the notes were in the right place, at the right time, with the right legatos and sticattos, but played in a completely different way with a very unique style.

He just couldn’t get over how much simpler I had made it to play the same riff. It was all because I was lazy.

The saying that tone is all in the fingers isn’t completely true, but how you play does make a tremendous impact on what you sound like. A big component of how you play is related to how your brain solves problems to find the best solution of how to play a given series of notes within a given time frame.

Something I like to do, take an old complicated progression, that uses maybe 10 chords or some such silly shite ( I Did It My Way, as an example) really simplify it and change the rhythm to whatever feels good. Find a new melody that works and write some lyrics for that.

Yea Vernon Reid actually plays that riff the hard way... no open strings and crazy shifting. Dude is a badass.

20 year player here. A lot of good advice here. Some advice I haven't seen: play with someone who is better than you. Doesn't matter what they play. Piano, bass, keys, whatever. Being around people with more experience is invaluable.
