Guitar thread got me thinking.

I'm thinking about buying my first drum set to mess around. Any tips for someone just starting out? Good do's and don'ts when first learning to play?

Learn it right to begin with. And stick with it...I taught myself how to play and it took me awhile to get all my body parts working together in the correct form. Many frustrations were had, but I'd do it all over again. Been playing for around 10 years now and love it. Starting up can be expensive.

Space needed?

Has to suck living with or next to a beginning drummer.

Nah. I'm looking at electronic drums, where I can adjust the volume and play through headphones.

I'm no fool, you see.

Prepare your anus. Some purists may take offense.

Don't know what kind of cash you have to shell out to get a reasonable similarity to the real thing. Meaning sensitivity to hardness of strike and such.

I'm not worried about purists. For drums, I need something versatile. I have a family and live in a subdivision. Plus, I'm listening to a lot of synth pop these days and like the idea of electronic drums.

I remember playing in bands throughout college. The hardest member to find was the drummer. Kind of digging the idea of being "that guy" now.

This.

We have a little thread going here too.

There's some tips in there but it hasn't had much action for a while.

The wrist snap exercise with stick in hand. Build up the forearm´s resiliency and quickness. I don´t know if there are videos or diagrams on the internet.

This is very important.

(I know) I´m Losing You- The Faces

My kit is set up exactly like Kenny Jones in this video, except I play split snare-high hat (I play open, with the snare between my legs, instead of crossover, which is proper). Ah, I hang the octobans to my left, where the high hat should go, and have the single mounted tom the furthest right it can go.
