Was watching Joe Rogan talk to Steve Rinella about how much freedom they give their kids online. He brought up having to sneak around to watch “Faces of Death” in comparison of how easy it is to access certain things.

I googled it, but didn’t watch any videos or pictures. But some of the things I’ve read makes me no want to watch it.

Have y’all ever seen it?

It was the taboo VHS video growing up. More taboo than Taboo. There would be rumours some kid was able to rent it and everyone would flock to his house.

Well we found out later most of the scenes are fake and the ones that aren't you can see in a Driver's Ed video (Red Asphalt) or a wildlife special.

These videos were really popular when I was in high school in the 80s. I can remember being at a friends house that had one on. The first scene was a guy parachuting into an alligator pit, or something like that, and I can remember thinking "this isn't as bad as I was expecting it to be".

The next scene was bashing monkeys in the head with hammers and I was out.

I watched it a long time ago. Pretty gross. If you are into truly morbid entertainment this will do. One viewing was plenty enough for me.

Yep. Buddy got a copy in high school and a bunch of us watched it. The girls walked out pretty quickly and after a few deaths, only a couple weirdos were left to watch the whole thing.

A lot like porn. Great for 5 minutes, but gets weird watching longer than that.

I remember some dude blowing his brains out at a podium during some conference and a guy bouncing off the ground after his parachute failed.

Yup. Girlfriend my senior year in the late 80's was into crazy horror movie stuff and got several of those videos. Some was obviously fake, some was disgusting autopsy footage, and some was sort of accident footage if I recall.

Basically just gross and nothing I was into...though the blowjob I got for watching it with her afterwards was fine.

Wait, your girlfriend got turned on by watching Faces of Death? Yeesh, I would've slept with one eye open after that.

I watched it with a buddy of mine. We managed to find it and rented it after we had heard all the rumors about the deaths. It was fine and I’ve always been intrigued by macabre type shite. Some of it was definitely weird and freaked me out though.

I also rented them myself when I was in high school. When I found a new one at the rental store by my house, I’d pick it up.

Oddly enough, the autopsy type stuff is what creeped me out the most. And like most people my age, I was disappointed later on when I found out that most of the scenes were faked.

The one I remember the most had the woman that got hit by the boat propeller, the magician that was crushed in the head by the knives trick, and other stuff (that I am struggling to remember now). I think maybe that was FoD4..?

It was sort of a Nat-Geo-style documentary on the various forms of death that had a lot of fake scenes (like one where in some 3rd world country, there is supposedly a custom where the rich eat the brains of a live monkey. They show a real live monkey being placed in the center of a donut-shaped table and just as the chefs are sawing away the cap of the monkey skull so the patrons can spoon out raw brains, you clearly see the monkey is now fake.)

But sometimes, rarely, they'd show some real 2 minute unedited LiveLeak-ish news footage where a suicide jumper splatters on the pavement.

I think the most shocking piece to me as a city-boy teenager was seeing a live cow at a meat factory being slaughtered. That initial slice to the cow's loose skin neck to properly bleed them out made me shudder, then came the skinning & butchering.

Curious which videos were fake as most of the ones I've watched we're from live unleashed video. Several you can google about and see as well but the internet wasn't as easy to access back then

Late 80s through early 90s VHS was the medium to watch anything and Faces of Death was the taboo thing to get your hands on. It’s success created this weird phenomena where bootlegging home made shock VHS tapes were being distributed through mom and pop stores, getting more morbid and gross. I’m talking things like Traces of Death, bum fights, ensuring your place in hell etc. This later caught on in the 2000s where shock videos were distributed online instead. It’s a weird and bizarre fad that has since been long gone, but was started and popularized by Faces of Death.

I remember that one.

And one where they drew and quartered a guy with horses in some shithole. His torso was in the brush afterwards iirc.

Been a long time since watching those.

Yeah, that's the one. Aside from the news reel stuff, the majority was obviously faked footage.

I was 13 when I watched it so when she took her top off, I lost interest in everything else.

Don't need to, just look at an Anti-fa rally, more legit.

I was just watching a documentary last night on the pro skateboarder(Gator) that murdered his girlfriend's best friend in the early 90s and he had a massive collection of those types of films.

I don't remember them being a thing but I usually rented from Blockbuster.
