I could've sworn the mud people were only at Woodstock 94.
I remember that. The Green Day mud fight was hilarious, back before Green Day became huge pussies.

21 year old me was there. It was epic (both the shows and the shiite that took place throughout, especially that last night).

The thing with the $4 water was that it was multi-day event where you were camping. The camping all took place inside the fence line. So, the first step was walking to pick a campsite that was over a mile away from the parking lot. You had to live off that water in a cash-only environment in the hot sun. I think water was either free or cheap at Woodstock '94 so most people expected that and got hit with sticker shock. I think they had a few ATM's about, but a lot of 18-20 year olds in 1999 didn't have ATM cards.

The mud was from the the mess that formed at the porta potty/hand wash stations that were situated on (what would eventually be) just dirt. People were sliding around in it to cool off.

I didn't anything non-consensual going on sexually, but there were 250,000 people there and half the security staff quit and joined the party (they were nowhere to be found on day 3), so not surprising.

The problem was that it wasn't just dirt.

True. I really don’t remember much of a rank smell though that wasn’t just BO.

I really didn’t think much of it at the time. By about that time some of the girls started to walk around naked so that’s what I was interested in.

Truth, the grunge of the early 90’s fit way better with the original Woodstock than the nu metal of the late 90’s.

Well they were successful in recreating the disgusting original Woodstock...so kudos to the organizers.

Never understood why people would pay good money to go to such things.

If you want Hep C, just pull your dog away from the toilet and drink from it for a week.

The media tried painting Fred Durst responsible for the riots and rapes, but the blood is clearly on the hands of the event promoters. No access to basic utilities like water and restrooms plus over packing the event with too many people. The entire thing was a cluster frick beyond comprehension.

I was there and this is 100% correct. When I got back home I could not believe what I was seeing on TV when Kurt Loader was up there trying to blame Limp Bizkit for the rioting.

I've been to a ton of festivals big and small in my life and Woodstock 99 was BY FAR the worst run.

The other problem was at many of the entry checkpoints they were making people dump any food or water that they tried to bring in. There was some stuff that was supposed to be allowed like water but security was so poorly trained they were just flagging everything.

Also, every ATM machine I tried was out of cash almost from the start. So if you didn't have any money you were kind of fricked. You could leave the grounds to go to town to get cash there but it was such a long trek my group decided we were better off simply buying the cheapest food possible which for us was a random stand that had uncooked bagels that came with cream cheese.

The free water lines broke on the second day which forced a lot of people to buy the bottled water.

Broken water lines were part of what caused the mud issues but the other problem was that the porta pottys were only cleaned out once a day early in the morning. If you didn't do your business at the start of the day you risked going into porta pottys that were so filled with shite it would be towering over the seats. Good luck finding toilet paper if didn't bring any of your own. Many of the porta pottys were set up on uneven ground so piss and shite would start to leak out from them due to being overloaded. I still remember the brochure bragging that they had set up 2500 porta pottys for the 400k people attending. You do the math on 2500 toilets for 400k people cleaned once a day. There is no way to describe it other than it was a shitty situation.

Because of how awful it was to this day if I'm going to an all day or multi day festival when heading in to the show area I always bring a backpack that has at least $100 in 10s and 20s, a full roll of TP, two bottles of water w/one being partly frozen, and I pop an Imodium before heading out. I don't care if my friends make fun of me for it b/c I refuse to ever be caught up in situation like that again.

Girls walking around topless seemed to be ok from what I saw however depending on the artist on stage women that I saw on a dudes shoulders that took their tops off had multiple sets of hands instantly grabbing at their breasts. So if you were at Willie Neslson, Jewel, Jamiroquai, or Dave Matthews you'd be ok. But the women I saw at sets for stuff like Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Korn, and Rage Against the Machine? They were getting grabbed. Hell, you can even see it happen on the official Woodstock 99 VHS that they later released.
