I hear all the time about how awful an actor Nick Cage is. I admit his performance in Con Air was over the top and atrocious, and I've not seen Season of the Witch, Snake Eyes, and the like... but I don't get the hate.

His performances in Face Off, replicating Travolta, and Matchstick Men were on point...he was cast perfectly for those roles.
Matchstick Men
I even enjoyed his performances in the National Treasure movies.
I know I'll get roasted and I'm not unwilling to concede his awfulness (especially with ConAir....Jesus H.) but just help me see it... enlighten me...Thanks.

that's reassuring... I guess its hard to place where I hear the criticism but I could've sworn it included this board.

Raising Arizona is a top 5 comedy all time for me and his performance was incredible. He put out solid flicks throughout the 90's and early 2000's. Fame and some bad decisions made him go a little nuts. Then he had the IRS thing making him take every job that came across his table by default being in some shitty movies but he's done some solid ones along the way. Love me some Nic Cage.

His excess takes you out of the movie you're watching. It just becomes Nick Cage overacting in every other scene.

If Nicolas Cage didn't accept every role he was offered, he'd be more respected overall.

That said, I don't think he's hated on as awful.

Some roles he nailed to perfection, others he went too Cage method and the rest he mailed in.

Raising Arizona

and where he´s the cop suffering the notion that what he´s investigating could have happened to his daughter.

Other than that, he´s bad, IMNSHO.

How did he get work, having Coppola blood (normally, unless it´s the proper studio on a wild hare, they want nothing to do with potential nepotism)?

That movie bad cop port of new orleans (or whatever) was crazy. Just recently watched the one where he plays a congressman after the BP spill. I think he fit the part well.

I even really love Knowing.

Hell, I even liked Pay the Ghost (even though it was constructed horribly as a film)

People will mention Moonstruck, Peggy Sue Got Married, Raising Zona, The Weather Man, World Trade Center, National Treasure, City of Angels, Con-Air, the Rock...and of course Leaving Las Vegas.

But the three movies that ARE Nic Cage in acting and what he emotes...and his most rewatchable...are...

1. Family Man
2. Matchstick Men
3. It could happen to you

I always thought he was a better semi-rom guy than a buffed action Rock guy...and

He nails it in his married or a little more sensitive roles. I mean he got his big break as the sensitive stoner in Valley Girl.

His cluelessness about how relationships work is pretty funny.

Him just being an action dork isn't as interesting.

I think he should have stayed in comedy like Arizona and rom-com.

Probably his best acting job

Look, I like some of his movies but he is a terrible actor.
