Why is Casablanca a top rated movie for you?

It is always in the top 5 of All-Time movies of online lists. But I'm curious how many people actually have it in their personal top 5. Sure, there are the timeless quotes. The "first" cliche love story. But at the time it was produced, it was never really meant to be anything other than a propaganda film.

For me, it's Bogart at his best. It's to the point and tells a great story without any frills. It has a dry humor (even outside of Bogart). And, of course, Bergman is a hottie.

It's not in my top 5 or even my top 100. Then again I don't really like old movies.

I typically don't like old ones either. They tend to pander. This one actually moves along well. The story is always advancing.

But I guess that's my point. I doubt it's a top 5 for even 1% of the country.

Old movies are the best.

It is a top 10 movie for me, but I value other genres like scifi more than most.

I love the real life stories of the actors involved, like the French woman crying during the singing of their national anthem.

Really cool stuff that elevates the story even more.

My favorite character is the chief of police. He's the only honest man from beginning to end. Even if he is a crook.

At the beginning, she's the girl he sends home basically breaking up with her. Then she starts hooking up with Germans but is seen crying when the anthem is sung.

If it ends with Rick and Ilsa getting back together, hardly anyone around now would have even heard of the movie. It is a good movie that is launched into greatness by one of the best endings of all time.

It is a good movie, not great. But a good movie would now be the best movie of the year by a billion miles.

You know those threads where everyone is in utter shock of movies you post you haven't seen?

This is that movie for me. I still have yet to see it over all of these years.
