Why did Lord Commander Jeor Mormant (Jorah’s Father) end up at the wall?

Did he join willingly, or get sentenced to go there? If so why?

Willingly. It’s a high honor in the North to join the Night’s Watch, and he thought Jorah was a fine replacement. Turns out he was selling slaves later, but he at least left the sword behind.

So he goes to the wall to allow Jorah to rule bear island, and Jorah was selling slaves while ruling bear island?
Then Jorah nails to essos to avoid execution via ned?

Back when he joined it was an honor. Much like when Benjen Stark joined.

Yep. He married a Hightower, which is right under the Lannisters as being the richest family. She was spoiled and Jorah went broke trying to keep up with her appetite. He eventually got into the slave trade, but was caught. Ned was on his way to Bear Island to chop his head off, and then he fled leaving the sword behind.

He joined willingly because he felt Jorah was old enough/ready to take over as head of House Mormont. Jorah screwed it up by selling slaves and fleeing Westeros.

I think there’s more to it than we have been told so far in the books (which isn’t much).

I've always had a soft spot for Jorah in the books and I hope he gets redemption. He's just pathetic in the show though

Dude just carries a lot of guilt around with him. It's all because he just made a series of shitty life choices. First it was the slaves, then it was spying on Daenerys. And then he was a sympathetic figure trying to make amends for all of them.
