I know, I guess they're technically part of the film in its original form, but then again maybe not.

I just had to sit through 10 f-ing minutes of pointlessness before Ben Hur on TCM... Then they showed the MGM logo and began the movie. I simply don't get it.

Btw, what the hell was the point of an overture anyway on those old epics? It just made 3 HR movies even longer for no apparent reason but to keep people in the theater and buying more Coke and popcorn.

Many older movies actually had intermissions.

Ben-hur originally had an intermission.

There was a break in the middle, so the extra 5 mins at the start was irrelevant.

Weeds out the fake movie fans who say they want uncut films but really want them edited to suit their needs.

I think the most recent film I saw in the theaters with an intermission was Gettysburg (the extended version).

I could actually get into it under the right circumstances.

Overture, ah back in a time when you had great composers with original music.

Overture was used to set a theme of the movie like in:

I do collect many of the sound tracks of these movies.

There are many great composers and the above is just a small example of their work.
