Who was really in the right in Crimson Tide - Hackman or Washington?

Caught parts of this movie a couple of times. But not sure I've seen it 100% straight through.
Anyway, caught a bit of it at lunch today and Denzel Washington says "I did everything by the book" But Gene Hackman seems pretty sure he is following protocol.
So, do they ever make it clear who was actually following the rules correctly?

Well gene Hackman was released and Denzel was promoted. Plus the fact that Hackman nearly started a nuclear war for no reason I think puts Denzel in the right

Hackman was right. He had orders to launch. Washington was a hippie pacifist.

I was in the army not the navy, but there is protocol that has to be followed in situations like the one the USS Alabama was put in. An hackmans charector did not follow the right protocol. That is the reason the 2nd in command backed Denzel.

hackman would've started WW3. denzel just wanted confirmation.
i mean God help him if he's wrong, but if he's wrong we're at war, God help us all.

Since Hackman was issuing an unlawful order Washington was in the right.

Great film. One of my favorites. Denzel was right.

They were both right. Captain Ramsey was right in wanting to launch the missiles. He had direct orders from the high command to do so. He had a pretty good counter-argument to Commander Hunter's redundancy theory - the idea that other subs were out there and that they would launch if the orders still stood. Ramsey had to assume that those subs were destroyed by the Russian rebels and that he was the only sub left capable of launching.
On the other hand, Ramsey did break protocol and was rightly relieved of command. The XO has to concur with the captain's decision and he did not concur. Therefore, they were to stand down. Ramsey was out of order trying to relieve Hunter from his position for failing to concur.
