White man can’t jump

Saw it on tv the other night and I always enjoy it when it’s on. I like ole Billy but every time I see this movie he pisses me off losing all of his money on stupid bets. I felt bad for Gloria and she should have left Billy a long time ago. She always made my head hurt with the you lose when you win, you win when you lose, and you win when it’s a tie crap lol. I like the dynamic of Billy and Sidney. Both are hustlers who played each other and had a friendship at the end. As a kid I never understood in the beginning when they kept saying your momma is a astronaut and I was like wtf is that supposed to mean lol. Also, Billy had on them Nike classics!

Sydney’s wife: All I care about is getting out of the Vista View apartments, because there ain't no "vista", there ain't no "view", and there certainly ain't no vista of no view.
Gloria: don't like the word "screw," OK? I prefer "make love" or "frick." Screwing is for carpenters
Sydney: frick you, your mother's astronaut
Billy: My mother was too drunk to be astronaut

I say that all the time and people look at me like I'm an idiot.
I love love love this movie.
And as annoying as Gloria's accent was, it was weirdly hot for teenage me.
But baby...it's the King and Duck!

Because of this thread I decided to watch it on Sunday.
I forgot that the opening scene is about half the movie.
I started the movie, fried up some sausage, drank two beers, took out the trash and emailed about 5 people and and the opening court scene in the movie was still going on.
And what was up with that flipped up bills back then?...and why is Snipes dressed like he's Lance Armstrong?
ETA: (I clocked it; the opening scene in this movie is fricking 20 minutes long! - 20 fricking movie minutes!)
That has to be the longest open in movie history...I mean time just stands still. They took WAY too long to set-up this story with Woody being a Hustler too.
The opening is either genius because you wonder is this the whole movie...a dorky white guy and black guys hustling him...
Or misguided editing because it spends about 10 minutes on Momma court jokes that have nothing to do with the story.

Hollywood hadn't figured out how people in the hood dressed or acted in 1992. That's why everybody's wearing short shorts, bike shorts and bike helmets.
White Men Can't Jump is such a likeable movie. Between that and Blade, I am a big Wesley Snipes fan. My favorite quote:
“A thing of beauty is a joy forever. My man John Keats said that. John Keats, that’s my man."

Interesting thread topic about movies where Hollywood is way behind the curve in popular culture...and it's obvious.
I think Colors is terrible. Not a terrible movie...but Colors came out only 3 years before Boys N' the Hood and looks like a relic in comparison...like it was 1980 and not 1988.

Yeah, I wasn't joking. Early 90's Hollywood is so out of touch with the inner city.
Friday was probably the first movie that actually was fairly accurate without being over the top violent or weirdly anachronistic.
In White Man Can't Jump, a lot of the soundtrack isn't rap. In early 90's inner city LA.

That’s because you can watch White Men Can’t Jump, but you don’t see White Men Can’t Jump.

Ehhh, the movie wasn’t really about inner city teens; it was set mostly in Venice and surrounding beach communities and the subjects were 30-40ish year olds playing basketball. Their style was along the lines of mars Blackmon.
If boyz n the hood had the characters dressing like these guys something definitely would have been off.
ETA- I could never figure out the astronaut joke either.
