It’s got to be between Japan and S Korea right? I lean towards Korean because from what I’ve seen, it’s more streamlined

Japan, China, and South Korea all make good movies. Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais have sort of put Thailand and Indonesia on the map as well.

I strongly disliked the Wailing. Other than the old crappy guy.

I've seen some really good South Korean flicks

The Wailing has its moments.
Not the strongest moment for Korean cinema...I just inculded it because it's on Netflix.
We all know Old Boy.
But very few have watched Bad Guy...which IMO is on par. If you want to get, what Korean Cinema is all about watch Bad Guy.
It's like I saw the Devil mixed with their more flowery stuff, Spring, Winter, Fall...
Korean cinema has extreme violence but they're also extremely wistful often about their violence.
I don't think Tarantino understood them and his love for them and copying them.
Korean cinema has never been violence for violence sake.
There's violence and there's tons of regret and mourning and confusion and poetry.

Sympathy for Mr Vengence is such multi-layers look at Asian culture we never see.
I will have to say, for Japanese movies, High and Low might be my favorite.

But you have to fricking see Bad Guy.
I tell everyone on this board.
It totally defines South Korean Cinema.
Think Old Boy but with wistful regret and sadness but almost more sadistical and strange.
SK cinema is not an enigma...they have this blueprint that they tell everyone through cinema who they are.
I think it totally explains SK cinema which can be totally weird, violent strange but then thoughtful and bewildering.
