The movie was released in the same year Nevermind was released. It was written, cast, filmed, edited, and released just prior to the seattle blowup.

Also, at the time nobody knew who RHCP were, the blood sugar album that made them blow up also hadn't come out, yet they had cameos in the movie.

It's great for what it is.
But I've always wondered how much influence James Cameron had on the movie. He was married to the director at the time and wasn't doing much else so it's always been rumored that he was a hidden script doctor and producer of the movie while letting her take the credit.
