MCU movies are all still very light.

Interesting thought on the heels of their Empire Strikes Back where their most fearsome villain just won and literally snapped half of life in the universe out of existence. If you mean more jokes and color, these are COMIC movies. They should be fun entertainment just like their source material. Not some brooding Godfather like piece of art.

I love the Batman trilogy but that is self contained in a vacuum and does not work for a comic universe with otherworldly beings and actual powers.

Which is why IW is the 4th highest grossing movie of all time and it’s sequel likely to surpass it. Hell, the one preceding it (BP) is 9th all time. Not to mention the Captain Marvel, female-led superhero movie hype. And getting the rights back to A-list properties in X-Men and F4 to add to this universe. Marvel is here to stay for a long time and will continue to print money

Went and looked it up...you're correct. I stand corrected.

I could have sworn that I read interviews with people directly involved with early MCU that there was no plan to have this larger universe until after IM1 was released. I could have sworn that they did the Nick Fury thing as just a small easter egg.

Oh well.

There's an interview on rotten tomatoes where Kevin Feige provides an oral history of the MCU development, and this particular quote pretty much sums up why the DCEU (specifically Batman v Superman) was such a failure from the beginning:

quote:

“Civil War came at a time in 2016 before an election. For us it was, ‘Hey there’s this great storyline from the comics that pit Iron Man and Captain America against each other.’ You could only do that storyline when you had enough movies behind you for that to mean anything. To know enough about Tony Stark’s point of view, to know enough about Steve Rogers’ point of view, to believe they could face off with each other that way and have it be heartbreaking and emotional. Not knowing, of course, that when the film was released, the world would be divided in much the same way. I think it’s another one of those things where, even below the surface, we’re influenced by real life, as we make these movies. And I think that was one of the reasons Civil War touched such a nerve: We were looking at these two people we love in a way that [we were looking at] two halves of the country, which clearly love each other as a country as a whole, but [are] facing off. How do we deal with these differences? In a superhero movie, they punch.”

I've heard it numerous times. Favreau said that it was his idea and Feige was all for it.
Marvel’s Post-Credits Scenes Almost Never Happened, Says Jon Favreau: ‘That Was a Bit of a Lark’

Also, Samuel L. Jackson wasn't under any contract when he appeared in that first post-credits scene. After the popularity of the scene and Iron Man I, they had to scramble to see if they would pay him or replace him.

They had a broad plan, but Iron Man's success and the popularity of the post-credits scene put them on a clear path. They now knew that Favreau's tone should be the tone of the MCU and that audiences would be excited for a shared universe with Nick Fury as the glue.

If they had started with Incredible Hulk or Captain America, it might've taken them years to figure it out.
